Chief of party

Chemonics seeks a chief of party for the anticipated multi-year USAID Feed the Future activity in Tanzania entitled MBOGA MATUNDA ("vegetable and fruits" in Swahili). The project aims to increase the competitiveness and inclusiveness of horticulture subsectors, increasing the productivity and profitability of the selected value chains, while improving the nutritional status of Tanzanians and integrating large numbers of women and youth. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world.
Responsibilities include:
  • Provide leadership, technical direction, and management oversight for all project activities and results
  • Provide overall vision and strategy for the implementation of the project
  • Serve as the project's primary liaison with USAID, the government of Tanzania, and international and local partners
  • Ensure program activities and designs are integrated with USAID's strategy and portfolio of programs across Tanzania
  • Ensure project compliance with all contractual and administrative requirements, with support from home office, deputy chief of party, and operations/finance team
  • Promote strategic planning, management, collaboration, and team work with shared vision, sound business decisions, and coordination with key stakeholders' national plans
  • Oversees development of annual work plans, new activity implementation plans, quarterly reports and other reports as USAID requires
  • Promote and publicize program activities and results through formal reports, public speaking, and (when possible) conference speaking and published articles
  • Manage, mentor, and develop a high performance team of international and local technical and administrative staff
  • Develop and maintain high-trust relationships with stakeholders at all levels -- from rural farmers to multi-national business executives and senior government leaders
Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in agronomy, horticulture, agricultural economics, agribusiness, international development, or other relevant field
  • Minimum 10 years of senior management experience on donor-funded, agricultural value chain development programs, preferably in Africa
  • Experience with programs that promote women's empowerment and gender parity in agriculture
  • Demonstrated experience interacting with government agencies, host-county governments and counterparts, and international donor agencies
  • Experience in managing subcontracts and grants to local organizations to promote agricultural or value chain development is preferred
  • Familiarity with USAID rules and regulations and experience in budgeting, procurement, and financial management
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with demonstrated experience in communicating complex processes to diverse stakeholders both internal and external to the program
  • Familiarity with the political, social, and cultural context in Tanzania a plus
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Fluency in English required
