Director, Research and Publications

DIRECTOR, RESEARCH AND PUBLICATIONS

ONE is a global advocacy and campaigning organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world dedicated to fighting extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa. ONE has offices in Abuja, Berlin, Brussels, London, Paris, Johannesburg, and Washington, DC. This position will work out of our Washington DC location.

The Director, Research and Publications will be responsible for all major print and online publications at ONE, performing research on new issue areas as identified by the Global Policy Director, and providing guidance on the development of ONE’s creative content. This position will head a new sub-team within Policy and Marketing to lead on creating a publications strategy that ensures ONE remains a leading voice on development policy through dynamic, creative publications that support ONE’s global campaigning priorities. The Director, Research and Publications will report to the Global Policy Director, with a dotted line relationship to the Chief Marketing Officer.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* Supervise a team responsible for the development and execution of a research and writing strategy working with ONE’s marketing and campaign teams to ensure that the timing, focus and tone of publications are consistent with ONE’s media and advocacy priorities

* Coordinate research by policy staff and external consultants; lead the writing and editing process

* Develop and implement a strategy for the re-launch of data.org including content, partnerships and creative elements

* Oversee ONE’s relationships with report consultants, designers, printers and copy editors

* Provide editorial guidance for Living Proof and help the Global Marketing team to identify, story board and validate Living Proof content and other stories from Africa

* Remain current on policy issues related to ONE’s work

* Serve as the primary point of contact between the Global Policy and Global Marketing teams; coordinate with the EU and US Media Directors to ensure that ONE’s media strategies are supported by strong and appropriate policy products.

* Coordinate with Africa, US and European-based partners to explore opportunities for ONE to co-brand, write and launch publications

* Proactively liaise with ONE’s teams in Europe, America and Africa, as necessary to craft and support a research and publications agenda

* Be an active participant in the management and decision making processes of the Global Policy and Global Marketing teams

SPECIFIC TYPES OF KNOWLEDGE, SKILL & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

* Deep substantive knowledge (5+ years experience) of development policy issues, familiarity with development data, and a Master’s degree in relevant field

* Exceptional written and oral communications skills

* Experience writing publications for external audiences and translating complicated development policy topics into concise and accessible public material

* Understanding of print, broadcast, and online media

* Experience managing multiple projects concurrently

* Ability to think and work successfully across teams

* Ability to think quickly and pitch complex policy ideas in an accessible form

* Experience interfacing between communications and policy

* Excellent team player and team building skills

* Strong management skills and experience managing teams

* Able to work a flexible schedule including long hours

* Understanding of the links amongst all key development priorities
