The Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services (GWU SPHHS) is conducting a study in Washington, DC focusing on linking HIV-positive ex-offenders from the DC Jail into community care. This study will be conducted in collaboration with investigators from Brown University/Miriam Hospital, New York University and the DC Department of Corrections (DOC). The Research Associate (RA) will assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in the overall management and coordination of the study. These duties will include day-to-day management of the study and research staff, assistance with regulatory activities, coordination of meetings, and generation of reports. The RA will assist with the formative activities for the study, including coordination at the clinical sites, training of Research Assistants, and collaborating with DOC and Unity Health Care (the medical provider in the DC Jail) medical staff.

The RA will supervise Student Research Assistants and a Data Manager. The administrative portions of the study will be conducted at the GWU Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics Office. The study will be conducted partially in the DC Jail and in a GWU-supported study clinic off-campus. The data collection will occur off-campus at each of these locations. In addition, additional data collection regarding medical visits may be necessary from individual medical and HIV clinics across the city.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and 1-3 years experience in the field (HIV research or correctional health) or in a related area.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Willingness to work with incarcerated and ex-offender populations.
  • Experience with quantitative data collection and/or analysis.
  • Familiarity with study participant retention efforts for longitudinal studies.
  • Experience with management of research and field staff (e.g. interviewers, research assistants).
  • Familiarity with clinical aspects of HIV disease and treatment.
  • Previous experience with phlebotomy or familiarity with blood specimen collection.
  • Excellent communication skills

Job Duties:

  • Manage all day-to-day study activities; oversee collection of survey data and perform QA/QC activities
  • Coordinate with the PI and staff to develop study protocols, trainings, and QA/QC activities.
  • Organize and run regular study team calls and meetings.
  • Work with data manager to ensure confidential collection, management and storage of study data.
  • Coordinate meetings and field operations with clinical staff and community advisors.
  • Document good clinical practices, quality assurance, and regulatory activities.
  • Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
