The South African Centre for Epidemiological Modelling & Analysis (SACEMA) is a national research centre established under the Centre of Excellence programme of the Department of Science & Technology and the National Research Foundation. SACEMA specialises in the mathematical modelling of diseases prevalent in South Africa, Southern Africa and the African continent.

SACEMA seeks to appoint a Senior Researcher, at Deputy Director level, to conduct, promote and co-ordinate original epidemiological research, contribute leadership and mentorship capacity to the organisation and sustain access to major funding.

Duties:
• Producing high-impact research which supports SACEMA’s sustainability;
• supporting existing field-based epidemiology projects;
• identifying new research projects;
• leading the development of major proposals;
• managing the execution of projects and reporting to funders;
• directing strategic partnership formation to enhance SACEMA’s expansion into multidisciplinary collaborative epidemiological research, including field-based components;
• supporting SACEMA’s interface with the public and political arena.

Requirements:
• PhD or equivalent qualification in Quantitative Public Health;
• at least a few years’ experience in conducting original research of an interdisciplinary nature, combining; elements of clinical/biological dynamics, biostatistics, population dynamics and health policy discourse;
• a substantial track record in leading the production of peer reviewed scientific output on topical aspects of; epidemiology in the context of hyper-endemic HIV and/or TB;
• experience in the mentoring of postgraduate students;
• a high level of competence in biostatistical analysis and dynamic modelling;
• experience in computer based simulation of epidemics;
• ability to manage fieldwork operations;
• experience in the development of study protocols for fundraising/ethical approval;
• excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• a valid driver’s licence.

Appointment will take place according to the University’s conditions of employment, and is subject to the availability of funds.

Commencement of duties: 1 January 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter
