The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) is part of the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a group of private, international, non-denominational agencies founded by His Highness the Aga Khan. The Network's organisations have individual mandates that range from the fields of health and education to culture, rural development and the promotion of private-sector enterprise. The Position
The Assistant Manager will be a key member of the small management team in Geneva. The main duties and responsibilities of the position would be to:


Prepare drafts of papers for the AKF Board, including Budget papers, papers for thematic meetings, reports on individual issues and projects/programmes, and preparation of briefing papers;

Work with the General Manager to conceptualise and implement initiatives to enhance the effectiveness of AKF's work.

Coordinate the process of arranging AKF Board meetings, with respect to preparing the agenda, assembling papers, organising logistics and ensuring follow-up;

Fully engage with Programme Managers and field offices in AKF's research agenda to drive AKF towards the cutting edge of development issues.

Document the results of research and disseminate this information in order to develop a culture of best practice and sharing of lessons learned.

Manage the Head Office's Communications activities and coordinate Communications across the Foundation. This role includes oversight of the Communications Assistance and involves working closely with the AKDN Information Officer;

Oversee the operation of the AKDN grant and project tracking system, including tracking and reporting on grants, projects and the funding pipeline. This role includes the oversight of the Analyst;

Oversee the workplan for monitoring and evaluation of the Foundation's programmes/projects, including review of proposed terms of reference; coordination of responses to monitoring/evaluation reports; distribution of reports to the AKF Board; and broader dissemination;


The Requirements
The ideal candidate should have the following profile:


A keen appreciation of the objectives and ethical underpinnings of AKDN and AKF;

A strong interest in the developing world (sub-Saharan Africa and South/Central Asia) and an ability and to learn quickly about a broad range of development issues in which AKF is involved;

Excellent analytical skills and an outstanding ability to articulate issues and options in writing and orally;

An advanced degree: this might be in public policy, management, law or the social sciences;

Three to five years of experience in a position that combines analytical ability with the ability to apply knowledge and analysis creatively to the resolution of practical problems;

A solid educational and professional background in research;

Excels in team work and is capable of dealing productively with a wide range of stakeholders, including the AKF Board, staff throughout the Foundation, grantees, partners and the broader community interested in development;
