Functions:

Under the supervision of the Librarian, the indexer in the Court’s Library will have the following duties:

  • assign key words to articles, books and other materials in the various library databases; assist with cataloguing if necessary;
  • apply standard practices in database indexes and metadata and information analysis and synthesis;
  • scan the literature on different aspects of international law with a view to selecting works to be included in bibliographies, with the Librarian’s approval;
  • read and check bibliographies against references;
  • conduct library research in order to locate additional references of value to a specific project, such as case bibliographies;
  • determine which references are of most importance to a specific project;
  • participate in the development of information technologies;
  • perform other duties if required.

Qualifications and skills:

Education:

  • completion of higher secondary education.

Experience:

  • at least three years of relevant and progressively responsible experience in indexing or related activities.

Skills:

  • ability to identify significant concepts and themes in a text and to represent these thoroughly yet concisely using suitably formulated index terms;
  • commitment to enhancing services through teamwork and responsiveness to clients;
  • ability to work in a multicultural environment.

Languages:

  • proficiency in English and French; a knowledge of other languages is desirable (in particular, the major languages of publication in the field of international law).

Remuneration:

The Registrar reserves the right to appoint a candidate at one level below the advertised level of the post.
