Working in over 45 countries, the global ActionAid family helps to build a fair and just world where everyone can claim their rights. The Right to Education Project (RTE) aims to promote mobilisation and accountability on the right to education. Housed by ActionAid and working in partnership with the Global Campaign for Education and Amnesty International, RTE conducts research, develops advocacy tools and builds capacity of education activists worldwide, building bridges across disciplines – human rights, education and development. Join us as the Right to Education Project Communications Officer and help us deliver on our aim of ensuring every child has the right to education.

As part of the RTE team, you will communicate legal content and advocacy tools to education advocates across the globe via the RTE website (www.right-to-education.org).

You will undertake a revamp of RTE’s extensive website transforming it into an online hub for education rights. You will lead outreach efforts with education activists to engage in online information sharing and learning. You will monitor global developments on the right to education highlighting opportunities for mobilization through the website, social media and a quarterly e-bulletin. From supporting training workshops to contributing to funding proposals, you’ll play a key role in ensuring the success and high profile of RTE.

With a postgraduate degree you will have a solid understanding of international human rights law and a strong background in economic, social and cultural rights, especially as it relates to the right to education. You’ll have excellent English written communication skills with prior experience of communicating complex legal information to diverse audiences. With strong networking skills and experience of working with online activist communities, you’ll bring creative ideas for developing and organizing RTE’s online tools and resources. Ideally, you’ll have experience of building capacities using a human rights based approach.

Role Overview:
As part of a small team, promotes and supports legal advocacy on the
right to education in line with the goals and aims of the Right to Education
Project (RTE). Communicates legal content and advocacy tools to
education advocates across the globe via the RTE website. Undertakes a
revamp of the extensive RTE website (www.right-to-education.org), which
serves as a resource tool to practitioners, transforming it into an online
hub for education rights – and maintains the web-site as an inter-active
resource. Leads outreach efforts with right to education actors to engage
in online information sharing and learning. Monitors global developments
on the right to education, highlighting opportunities for engagement for
RTE’s constituencies through social media, the website and a regular e-
bulletin. Develops guides and tools for programmes and partners aimed
at facilitating a human rights based approach and contributes to human
rights reports and policy briefs. Contributes to Project funding proposals and strategic planning.

Communications:
- Communicate legal content and advocacy tools to education

- Undertake a revamp of the RTE website (www.right-to-
education.org) to update and modernise the structure, content and
interface to be more interactive
- Maintain, update and manage the content of the RTE website’s
extensive informational resources, which includes a wide range of
human rights information and tools for practitioners
-Coordinate quarterly RTE e-bulletin
- Develop and implement a social media strategy (YouTube, Twitter,
Facebook, etc.)
- Develop a range of information and promotional materials, such as
informational guides, YouTube videos, leaflets, etc., to promote
RTE and its legal tools

Human rights research:
- Monitor developments relating to the right to education
internationally and compose daily updates, stories, and posts;
research and source feature stories
- Work with and support the team to develop human rights reports,
policy briefs and advocacy tools for education practitioners, when
required

Networking & outreach:
- Network with RTE stakeholders (e.g., development practitioners,
educationalists, human rights lawyers, academics, civil society
organisations, etc.)
- Build and facilitate an online community of practitioners to
promote a human rights based approach on education rights;
source expert contributions to the RTE website
- Organise events and meetings to raise the profile of RTE and its
outputs
- Support in delivering training workshops on education rights,
raising awareness of human rights standards and advocacy
strategies

Planning & funding:
- ntribute to the Project’s fundraising proposals and strategic
planning; research potential funding sources

Person Specification:

Education & Certifications :Postgraduate education in relevant field, including human rights Law

Essential Knowledge and Experience :
solid understanding of international human rights law with a
background in economic, social and cultural rights; understanding
of children’s rights
Strong ability to convert dense content and complex human rights
legal concepts into dynamic language and user-friendly formats
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, ability
to inform and engage through written communication, including
strong editing and proofreading skills; ability to write for diverse,
non-legal audiences
Good understanding of how to develop information guides or
awareness-raising resources for wide use and uptake and creative
ideas on how to accomplish this
Competent in using web content management systems (no
experience of computer programming required)
Strong awareness of the of the evolving social media landscape
Excellent interpersonal and networking skills
Experience of working with development practitioners
Understanding of human rights based monitoring, campaigning
and advocacy strategies
Experience in building and/or maintaining a similar website
Experience of delivering human rights training
Experience of working on funding proposals
Knowledge of French, Spanish or Arabic.
