Company Profile | Tshulu Trust is a not-for-profit organisation based in HaMakuya, Limpopo Province, South Africa. Tshulu aims to enhance responsible well being and achieve sustainable livelihoods by improving the capacity of community members to utilise their natural and cultural resources sustainably.
Tshulu Trust is self-sustaining: it does not rely on external funding to support its core, ongoing development initiatives. The primary income-generating activity that funds Tshulu’s activities is an edu-tourism venture based at Tshulu Camp, along with the HaMakuya Home-stay Programme. Tshulu’s primary client base consists of South African and international university groups that visit annually. Activities are inter-disciplinary and consist of research, course work and/or community service and volunteerism.
Tshulu’s primary development goal is livelihoods enhancement and job creation, but the Trust also supports initiatives in education, health and environmental sustainability. |
Job Description | Job Description Responsibilities and requirements will be as follows:
As Programme Manager: • Managing and implementing Tshulu Trust’s vision, mission and strategy • Overseeing the Trust’s organisational development, including capacity building of the Board, management and staff. • Overseeing governance including financial management and legal aspects • Attracting new university group clients • Contributing to increased product and market development, for Tshulu’s core income-generating activities and those of the micro-enterprises the Trust supports • Managing Tshulu employees and related HR functions • Selecting, training and managing guides/translators • Supervising interns and volunteers • Liaising with the leadership and community members of HaMakuya • Liaising with project partners such as local representatives of the Departments of Health, Education and Environment • Capacity building and training of Tshulu staff and HaMakuya community members • Overseeing the implementation of the Trust’s communications and relationship-building strategy • Developing and implementing a fundraising programme, including proposal writing, reporting (narrative and financial) and other donor-related activities • Monitoring and evaluation and regular reporting
As Research Officer: • Liaising with university groups regarding their research and other academic requirements • Facilitating research in the community as requested by visiting university researchers and groups • Ensuring that visiting researchers and university groups abide by the ethics and other protocols in place to ensure that research done is approved of by Tshulu Trust and by HaMakuya community leaders, and that the data and findings are available for the use of community members • Giving lectures on HaMakuya and its context • Running workshops and seminars on participatory, action research and community-based research methodologies • Briefing and debriefing visiting groups on home-stays • Ensuring that visiting individuals and groups understand the principles underpinning Tshulu Trust and the protocols that enact these principles, and that visitors abide by these principles and protocols.
Qualifications, capacities, experience and attitudes
Required: • A Masters degree • A valid driver’s licence • Experience working in development in an under-developed rural area, preferably in Africa
• Respect for people of a different culture, class, ethnicity, race, gender or religious orientation, and the ability to act respectfully even under pressure • Excellent people management, teamwork and interpersonal skills • Willingness to work after hours and over weekends • The ability to be flexible and make new arrangements when something does not go as planned • Excellent English writing skills • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills
Desirable • Experience lecturing or tutoring university students • Experience doing community-based research, action research, and/or using participatory research methodologies • The ability to communicate verbally in TshiVenda • Management experience in the civil society sector, preferably at grassroots level • Experience with young people and youth projects • Experience fundraising • Produce development and marketing skills an advantage • Website development and other communications experience an advantage • Good numerate skills, with experience in financial management an advantage • Experience working in a remote rural place with limited access to the social and leisure opportunities available in urban areas
