Research Assistant

CIMMYT is seeking for a dynamic, innovative and self-motivated professional for the position of Research Assistant in Tanzania for a four year project, co-led by CIMMYT and IITA, entitled "Taking Maize Agronomy to Scale in Africa (TAMASA)". This position could be filled by someone with one or more of the following skills: agronomy, soil science, crop science and geo-spatial systems and analysis.

The Position:
This is a national recruited staff position and the selected candidate will be based at CIAT/Selian offices in Arusha, Tanzania. He or she will work as a member of TAMASA project team, and will work with and report to National Coordinator, TAMASA-Tanzania.
Specific duties of this position Include:
Assist the project Coordinator in planning and implementing multi-locational project activities in the country in conjunction with the focal point persons and other partners.
Implement collection of relevant data to enable analysis of yield-gap, soil constraints at different scales and populating agronomy databases.
Work with the Coordinator in developing and testing of decision-support systems, tools and APls (e.q. mobile phone applications) with maize sector stakeholders in the country.
Assist and support the project supported post-graduate students' research and field work.
Work with the Coordinator in communicating research results to various audiences and in various forms, papers for publication and presentations of results of this research.
Perform any other assignment related to the project activities given by the Coordinator and/or Project Leader.

We are seeking candidates with the following academic qualifications, skills and attitudes:
MSc in Agriculture with emphasis in agronomy, crop science, and soil science (and the covering
letter should expand on the relevance of your skill-set).
Minimum 3-5 years' experience working with agricultural research in your field/discipline.
Demonstrated knowledge of maize based farming systems in Tanzania and understanding basic agronomic and crop management practices.
Ability to work under minimum supervision and conceptualize complex problems into analytical and operational frameworks.
Willingness to travel and work widely in Tanzania
Good understanding of gender and social inclusion issues and experience with ways of addressing these in research for development programs in order to promote equality of opportunity and outcomes.
Clear understanding of the technical and institutional challenges for sustainable intensification in the country and the role of improved scientific knowledge management for decision support to development interventions.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, experience working and interacting effectively with a variety of stakeholders (farmers, extension workers and other service providers, public and private sector entities, national programs) and demonstrate ability to collaborate well across disciplines and with key collaborative institutions and agencies in the country.
Ability to synthesize, write and package information into knowledge sharing products.
Fluent written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
Good experience in driving including possession of a valid driving license.
Knowledge of geographic information system, strong analytical skills and the capacity to innovatively use modern systems and IT-based tools are added advantages.

Terms of offer:
The position is nationally recruited with the initial contract of two (2) years, subject to a probation period of three (3) months, and are' renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
