Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) Internship Opportunities

Background

FAWE is a pan-African Non Governmental Organisation founded in 1992 to promote girls’ and women’s education in sub-Saharan Africa in line with Education for All. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, FAWE has a network of 35 National Chapters operating across Africa.

FAWE's mission is to promote gender equity and equality in education in Africa by fostering positive policies, practices and attitudes towards girls’ education. The goal of the organisation is to increase access and retention as well as improve the quality of education for all girls within the school system and for women in universities.

In its 2008-2012 Strategic Plan, FAWE instituted an internship programme to encourage young graduates and university students who and are interested in gaining practical experience in their field of study. Interns provide support to specific FAWE units according to identified needs.

FAWE encourages the placement of interns at its Regional Secretariat in Nairobi and in National Chapter Secretariats.

Interns may be of any nationality or gender as long as the engagement is mutually beneficial to the intern and the requesting organisational unit, and thus to FAWE.

Accounting

Responsibility

The intern will be attached to Finance & Administration section and will be responsible for the following:
  • Using the current fixed assets register, identify all movable FAWE assets, ascertain their conditions and confirm their location ;
  • Make suggestions on the assets that should be discarded ;
  • Coordinate the sale or donation of the assets that are to be discarded ;
  • Make suggestion on a tagging system and tag all the remaining assets ;
  • Prepare separate schedules of assets based on their location. This schedule will be signed by the staff occupy the office.
  • Any other duties that may be assigned by the Senior Finance & Administration Officer
Required qualifications and competencies

The internship is open to students, recent graduates or new entrants into a particular field.

Applicants should:
  • A bachelor degree or diploma in accounting,or enrolment in a graduate-level degree programme in a development related field such as Education, economics, business administration, sociology, programme/project management or related field. Demonstrated interest in the field of development
  • Previous work experience in fixed assets management will be a plus.
  • Have strong speaking and writing skills in English.
  • Be able to follow instructions, but also work independently
Conference Assistant

Responsibility
  • Work out a budget for the entire event for discussion with the PO and subsequently, senior managers
  • Ensuring all insurance, legal, health and safety obligations are available for participants
  • Make available all the necessary equipment required by the participants and speakers for the conference
  • Select and book a suitable venue according to the requirements of FAWE and in accordance to the type of conference.
  • Organisation of accommodation and catering including the selection of menus
  • Work closely with the administrator to ensure all documents are translated and deadlines are respected
  • Arrangements for interpretation (if necessary) and secretarial services
  • Coordinating with identified speakers/facilitators/resource persons,
  • Work closely with the communication unit to ensure post-event activities - resolutions, contact with delegates and distributing of conference-related literature, analysing feedback from the participants/delegates
  • Coordinating venue management, stand designers (if the event involves an exhibition) contractors and equipment hire
  • Planning possible recreation, entertainment programs, gala dinners, excursions, etc.
  • Preparing participant/delegate packages, folders, brochures, posters, pictures and papers
  • Liaising with the Communication Unit, the PO, the NC and designers to create an appropriate brand and logo suitable for the theme of the workshop
  • Prepare all necessary travel tasks – ticketing, local transportation, VIP services visas etc to facilitate travel for participants.
  • To be physically present throughout the entire event to handle participants’ needs and queries and to make sure that the event runs smoothly
  • Responsible for the smooth management of dismantling and removal of all items, structures, equipment brought in for the event from the origin
Required qualifications and competencies

The internship is open to students, recent graduates or new entrants into a particular field.

Applicants should:
  • Recent graduate or enrolment in a graduate-level degree programme in a development related field such as Education, economics, business administration, sociology, programme/project management or related field. Demonstrated interest in the field of development
  • Past experience in conference/meeting planning and event management
  • Have strong speaking and writing skills in English. French will be an added advantage.
  • Be able to follow instructions, but also work independently
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of multiple stakeholders
Programme Administration Support Assistant

Responsibility

FAWE is seeking to enhance the program activities of its Program coordination section.

The intern is expected to support the work of the Programme Department in a bilingual setting of French and English.

Specifically, the intern will:

i. Request and manage up to date program activity information for the four programme officers including:
  • Updating and tracking the donor reporting tool to ensure timely submission of the progress reports to the donors
  • Provide support to all the POs in the preparation of the upcoming Sub General Assembly and the General Assembly
  • Maintain and update filling systems for programme related documents
  • Update governance related documents such as constitutions, contact list for National Executive Committee members, FAWE Charter etc.
  • Supporting SPCO to track, review and compile grant reports from POs and create monthly status reports
  • Request and manage periodic information flow between SPCO and Program Officers
ii. Participate in programme review and planning meetings.

iii. Provide the POs with support to complete reports necessary for the disbursement of Administrative grants

iv. Any other tasks assigned by the SPCO for smooth management and coordination of FAWE’s work programme.

Required qualifications and competencies

The internship is open to students, recent graduates or new entrants into a particular field.

Applicants should:
  • Have an academic background or strong interest in education, gender studies, sociology, programme/project management or related field
  • Have strong speaking and writing skills in both English and French.
  • Have academic knowledge or experience in girls’ education in Africa.
  • Have knowledge or experience in project cycle management thus, planning, implementation and evaluation of programs
  • Be able to follow instructions but also work independently
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of multiple stakeholders
  • Applicants will be required to take assessment tests to judge their suitability for this internship
