Program Associate - MENA

The International Center for Transitional Justice works to redress and prevent the most severe violations of human rights by confronting legacies of mass abuse. ICTJ seeks holistic solutions to promote accountability and create just and peaceful societies.

The Program Associate will be located in New York, and will provide support to the Director of Middle East and North Africa (MENA), in coordinating programmatic work for the region as well as at the country level. The Program Associate will also assist the Director with the organizational work. The position may involve travel to the region.

JOB VACANCY - PROGRAM ASSOCIATE

Responsibilities:


1. Assist the Director in the development, implementation and monitoring of the regional and country programs, and may take a lead role on a project or parts of a project, such as organizing workshops, seminars and other meetings.

2. Assist the Director with media requests and outreach, including: identifying media opportunities to generate ICTJ coverage; liaising with the media, responding to requests in English and Arabic, coordinating logistics, maintaining and updating MENA press lists and information.

3. Conduct research on issues pertaining to MENA, as requested by the Director.

4. Draft, review and edit reports, website page, newsletter, media releases, ICTJ Annual Report and other internal and external documents, in both English and Arabic.

5. Assist the Director in maintaining contact with international and local partners, organizations, embassies, and other relevant civil society actors or government officials.

6. Assist the Director in the organizational work for ICTJ, including:
o Establishing the budget and work plan for MENA, as well as monitor the implementation. In particular, assist the Director in administering grants/budgets so that ICTJ resources are used effectively and that assigned expenses and revenues reflect budget goals.
o Assist in writing funding proposals and reports to donors.
o Recruit and retain overall management of MENA interns.
o Participate in internal, organizational meetings (Retreat, staff meetings and country meetings).

7. Assist the Director in any other tasks for MENA, as necessary.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in international relations, law, political science or similar discipline is required. Advanced degree is desirable. Specialization in human rights, transitional justice, MENA region is highly desirable.

Experience: 2-3 years relevant work experience, preferably in human rights and/or international programs.

Related Skills or Knowledge:

1. Substantive academic or practical experience in human rights or transitional justice issues, particularly in MENA region.

2. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required.

3. Fluency in oral and written communication skills in Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.

4. Strong time management and project management experience is required.

5. Some supervisory experience is required in order to supervise interns and manage their recruitment. Occasionally instruct or assist other employees, and will sometimes delegate work assignments to others as directed by the Director.

6. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively with staff in ICTJ country offices and departments as well as external partners.

7. Advanced knowledge of MS Office and ability to use academic research tools is essential. Familiarity with internet/website editing is a plus.
