About Burma University Foundation School

Burma has been mired in chronic political, social and economic crises for two generations. At least 50% of the population lives in extreme poverty, and the country's GDP per capita is similar to Afghanistan & Rwanda. The military regimes that have ruled Burma since 1962 have neglected or actively dismantled the education system, meaning that schools & universities are unable to equip students with the skills needed to tackle the enormous challenges facing communities throughout the country.

The aim of the Burma University Foundation School is to prepare future community leaders, health workers and educators with the knowledge and skills that they need to pursue relevant tertiary education programs in the Asian region. BUFS works closely with community based partner organizations from around the country and has extensive links to universities and scholarship programs within the region that ensure that successful graduates are well placed to pursue their academic goals.

The school̢۪s curriculum includes classes in general and academic English, test preparation (TOEFL/IELTS), social studies and global issues and academic skills, including basic computing and critical thinking. Service learning is emphasized throughout the curriculum and students are given opportunities to provide direct service to disadvantaged communities. The BUFS̢۪s Residential Program supports students from rural areas to relocate to Rangoon and pursue intensive studies at the school.
