Senior Accountant– Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA)

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) is a State Corporation under the Ministry of Roads established by the Kenya Roads Act, 2007 with the core mandate of management, development, rehabilitation and maintenance of all public roads in the cities and municipalities in Kenya except where those roads are national roads.

The successful candidates will report to the Chief Accountant.

Job Summary

The overall responsibility of the position will be to ensure efficient and effective financial management and accounting function, proper functioning of the general ledger, accounts payable, proper functioning of the regional office’s financial systems and preparation of financial reports.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review all approved Tender and Procurement Committee awards for all goods and services including road projects.
  • Review of all certificates from Contractors, Consultants and Suppliers to determine their conformity with contract and actual progress.
  • Preparation and monitoring of monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports and budgets for various recurrent expenditure items and sub-components of projects by undertaking variance analysis.
  • Monitoring the movement of office cash.
  • Maintaining up to date books of accounts for projects.
  • Assisting in the preparation of periodic financial accounts by ensuring accurate Trial Balance and General Ledger payable.
  • Ensuring timely remittance of statutory deductions
  • Preparation of payment vouchers for Contractors, Consultants and Suppliers certificates.
  • Ensuring Statutory deductions, returns (PAYE, Withholding Tax & VAT) & Retention funds for all services are made on time.
  • Ensure training and adequate knowledge transfer is undertaken for all accounting personnel in the section.
  • Filing and safe custody of signed contracts and Authority’s vouchers.

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Bachelor of Commerce (Finance or Accounting Option).
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA II) or its recognized equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years relevant experience at management level.
  • Excellent working experience with projects is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of computerized accounting systems.
  • Strong interpersonal & communication skills with management and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build cohesive teams and achieve set targets through team work.
