Location:

Job category:
Research
Job type:
Part time, fixed term
Salary:
£32,878 per annum pro rata
Closing date:

Start date:
As soon as possible

As a highly experienced agrohydrological modeller with a proven track-record, (including a relevant publication record), you will provide expertise to the EU Demonstration Action project “WaterBee DA” which aims to enhance an existing prototype irrigation scheduling system. You will write and modify computer code for scheduling algorithms in order to improve the accuracy of the WaterBee system and will also analyse soil water, crop and weather data generated by WaterBee to validate and adjust the modelling approaches. You will be expected to publish high quality, peer-reviewed scientific papers and to develop concepts in irrigation scheduling strategy that will contribute to research proposals. You will work closely with project partners and attend project meetings at various sites around Europe.

A deep understanding of models of crop growth and soil water dynamics, particularly those already under development in WaterBee is essential, and the job requires extensive experience of detailed, mechanistic mathematical modelling of crop growth and soil hydrology. To achieve this, the job demands requires excellent mathematical and computer programming skills and you must therefore have a PhD in Mathematical Modelling in soil/water systems.

Experience of working in multidisciplinary teams is required and you must be able to understand the issues experienced by communications engineers, installers, growers and equipment suppliers, and to be able to communicate effectively with these consortium members.

The University’s full time hours are 37 per week. This is a part-time role (0.56 full time equivalent/ 10 months within the project lifespan). Time spent on the project (which has an end date of 30th June 2013) could be worked in blocks, for example a few months at a time, to suit the candidate and project needs.
