Internews Europe (IEU) Resident Journalism Advisor - Libya

Duration: Initial 5 months, March 1 - July 31, 2012, with possible extension to December 2012.
BACKGROUND
Under the direction of the Country Director in Tripoli, the RJA is a key in the implementation of Internews Europe Media Response project in Libya that focuses on the capacity building of media outlets. After the revolution, the need in Libyan communities for free and accurate information became a priority. Those who are currently reporting may not continue to do so when stable conditions are re-established in Libya. Thus Internews is on the ground focusing on developing professional journalistic skills and concrete business models, which will keep new media outlets afloat in the long term.
The main objectives are to establish a baseline for the content of select media in Tripoli and Misrata and develop a cadre of journalists equipped with the skills to produce high quality and professional radio/print/online programs addressing issues of importance to Libya during this critical transition. The project will be implemented through a joint Internews Network (US) and Europe team.
SCOPE OF WORK:
The RJA will be based in Misrata and will provide the mentoring/training and ongoing assessment of partnering media there. Occasional trips to Tripoli to work more closely with the Country Director on media trainings and assessments.
• Strategize with the Country Director on training techniques, partnership fostering, monitoring and evaluation milestones, and participant review.
• Report to the Country Director and to the Programme Director at Internews Europe in close consultation with the VP for MENA for Internews Network.
• Provide training, professional advice and guidance in media journalism planning for all trainings/curricula
• Assist in the overall development and implementation of the project in compliance with the funder rules
• Organize and lead workshops and conduct trainings
• Be well versed and comfortable with radio equipment and provide one-on-one mentoring to trainees
• Assist with news packaging
• Responsible for recruitment and supervision for training participants
• Report daily to Country Director and prepare the monthly reporting to Internews Europe
• Contribute to the reporting to the funder.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED (must have all):
• Fluent in Arabic and English and French a plus
• An understanding of the vision/mission, core values and objectives of Internews
• Experience and interest in MENA and in media development training
• Experience with media training of radio/print/TV
• Experience mentoring media personnel
• Assessment experience and strong analyses capabilities
• Comfortable traveling
• Comfortable residing in Misrata
• Strong communication skills and reporting skills, both written and oral.
• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a challenging and a highly fluid environment
• Excellent time management and the ability to prioritize a heavy workload under pressure.
• Excellent administrative and organizational skills.
• Relevant university degree.
