Role purpose
To build FTA’s external profile in broadcast, print and social media through the placing of stories and comment and the development of a network of media contacts
Duties
- To plan and deliver proactive media campaigns to promote FTA policy and business objectives
- To act as spokesperson for FTA with press and broadcast media and undertake live and pre-recorded interviews
- To respond quickly and effectively to media enquiries
- To act proactively to ensure broadest and best exposure for FTA’s messages across all sectors, issues and business services
- To line-manage the Press Office Assistant
- To draft media releases for national, regional and trade media, working closely with the relevant teams within FTA
- To build strong relationships with key journalists, particularly within the national and trade media
- To be confident in appearing on radio and television with FTA comment
- Website and social media growth and input
- Press office KPI management
- Out of hours inquiry management
- To manage the media relations strategy
- To manage network of FTA spokespeople
- To ‘place’ and write articles on behalf of FTA spokespeople
- To manage FTA’s media monitoring and newswire services
Requirements
Essential
- Keen awareness of the newsworthiness of stories and opportunities for making an FTA contribution
- Confident, articulate written and spoken communications skills; able to adapt messages and to suit different audiences
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Previous experience of radio/television appearances
- Flexibility to respond to out of hours inquiries
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with other teams
- Experience of working in a busy media office environment
- Ability to work to tight deadlines
- Man management experience
Desirable
- Network of national media contacts
- Familiarity with social media
- Understanding of transport/logistics sector
- Understanding of political lobbying process
