The advertised positions are for the Burnstone Mine, situated 80km south of Johannesburg, close to the town of Balfour. Burnstone Mine will be built on modern infrastructure to service mining activities, using specialised equipment and technology to enhance safe production over the life of the mine (which will exceed 19 years as part of Phase 1 of the project). Remuneration will be competitive and future increases will be performance based.

ENVIRONMENTAL OFFICER: ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS


Your mission will be to manage the environmental system (EMS), ensuring that the Mine is certified by the end of 2012. You will therefore be responsible for compiling EMP reports and updates, conducting internal legal compliance and EMP audits, and developing/managing rehabilitation and audit action plans. It will be your task to manage and control alien invader plant species as well as waste streams and bioremediation. Your influence will need to be felt as you create environmental awareness, liaise with internal and external stakeholders, support new projects and manage costs/budget. Your responsibilities will include facilitating licensing/permit applications.


A relevant 3-year degree or diploma in Environmental Sciences/Management is essential for this role, while a postgraduate degree/diploma would be advantageous. Short courses in Environmental Management, eg ISO 14001, Environmental Audit, Environmental Law, Environmental Impact Assessment, Monitoring and Compliance, etc are also required, along with at least 3 years’ experience in the environmental management field. You should, in addition, possess first-hand knowledge of EMS-ISO 14001 and its application. Exposure to environmental management in a mining environment would be advantageous. Computer literacy in MS Office, presentation and facilitation skills and a Code B driver’s licence are required.
