Orthopaedic Surgeon Kundiawa or Madang, Papua New Guinea

Duration: 2 years

Objective: To deliver orthopaedic services in selected hospitals and provide strategic coverage in the main catchment areas of Papua New Guinea.

Reporting to the project director, the orthopaedic surgeon needs to accomplish the following tasks:
  • Provide volume and high quality surgery both in the base hospital and at outreach centres (at least one week a month for outreach).
  • Train national surgeons, theatre as well as other professional hospital and project staff
  • Ensure the smooth running and development of the orthopaedic activities in the outpatient department, the surgery and the wards
  • Improve the surgery management (patient documentation)
  • Teach at universities and well as other institutions of higher learning
  • Prepare a national surgeon for the position

Special skills needed:
  • Extensive and solid clinical experience
  • Proven track record in general orthopaedics, plastic surgery, bone surgery, together with experience in paediatric orthopaedic surgery in a developing country
  • Teaching and training ability
  • Experience in organizing and managing surgical outreach work
  • Familiarity with CBM’s mandate in the field of orthopaedics as well as disability

Professional Experience and Profile:
  • MD with specialization in orthopaedics as well as professional experience
  • Excellent management skills
  • Intercultural knowledge and sensitivity are essential
  • Excellent inter-personal skills
  • Ability to motivate people
  • Team player and good communicator
  • Overseas experience in a developing country essential
  • Excellent English language skills
