Director, Community Relations

Barrick Gold Corporation is seeking a seasoned professional with global experience to lead the global implementation of Barrick’s Community Relations Management System (CRMS). At the core of the CRMS is the Community Relations (CR) Standard which lays out the site-level requirements for key areas of community relations including social impact/risk assessment, stakeholder engagement, community development, local procurement/employment, grievance management, Indigenous Peoples, resettlement, influx management and social closure.
The Director, Community Relations will provide leadership, direction and support to the Regional Business Units (RBUs) and sites as they implement the CRMS. They will build capacity across the company to manage social risks and impacts, develop positive relationships with the communities in which we operate, and maximise opportunities for mutual company-community benefit.
This exciting role will suit highly motivated professionals with a proven track record of managing Community Relations (CR) programs in the extractive industries, particularly in developing countries.
Your extensive experience in developing systems and building organizational capacity will have been developed across diverse cultural locations and you will be confident working at the site level and in the boardroom. This position would suit individuals who are excited by the opportunity to enhance the ability of Barrick teams to build and maintain positive stakeholder relations locally, regionally and globally.
The position is based in Toronto and includes significant international travel (up to 40%). The position will report to the Vice President, Corporate Social Responsibility.
Duties & Responsibilities

 Ensure company-wide adherence to Barrick’s Community Relations Policy.
 Provide leadership, direction and oversight for the corporate roll-out and implementation of the Community Relations Management System.
 Develop guidance materials (procedures, guidelines, etc) and provide technical advice to support the implementation of the Community Relations Standard.
 Ensure Exploration and Development Projects receive the necessary support and required expertise to address early stage social risks, and work with regional CR leads to monitor the evolving needs of high-risk operational sites.
 Ensure adequate monitoring and reporting of company’s global CR activities
 Participate and support the community content for the CHESS (Community, Health, Environment, Safety and Security) Governance Structure.
 Develop Key Performance Indicators to measure CR performance and create incentives to enhance the management of CR issues across the company.
 Oversee a program of capacity building (including training) and talent management across the CR function.
 Work with the EHS Audit group to ensure an effective CR Audit program, including tracking and reporting on audit recommendations.
 Provide support to Security Group-led Voluntary Principles assessment review process
 Participate in the due diligence process for new acquisitions from a social/community perspective
 Support the companies CSR and communication activities, both internally and externally.
 Work closely with other functional groups, particularly Environment, Security and Safety and Health, to ensure activities which impact the community are well managed.
 Represent Barrick at external meetings, industry/CSR forums and other events as necessary.

Experience & Requirements

 University degree, in social sciences, engineering, business or related field (postgraduate degrees are a definite asset).
 Approximately five or more years of experience, at a senior level, managing community relations programs in the extractive industries.
 Approximately five or more years working in or managing programs in developing countries.
 Proven track record working with management systems and building organizational capacity.
 Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to interact with a wide range of internal stakeholders.
 Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
 Proven ability to develop and coordinate programs, and work with teams, across culturally diverse regions such as Africa, Australia Pacific, South America and North America.
 An ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with all internal and external stakeholders.
 Monitoring and evaluation, and social auditing experience highly advantageous.
 Strong facilitation skills.
 Willingness and ability to travel frequently.
 Spanish speaking would be highly advantageous
