Temporary Employment in South Africa

ACADEMIC OR RESEARCH STAFF

If you are looking for academic or research employment opportunities, the following exist:

  1. Appointment in the short-term against vacant posts;
  2. Appointment on fixed term contract while a current academic member of staff is on academic leave (this can be anything from 1 month to 1 year depending on the extent of teaching and co-ordination required);
  3. Appointment on fixed term contract against temporary teaching funds. This tends to be more ad hoc work and of a short duration; and
  4. Appointment on fixed term contract of varying lengths on research projects, the finances which have been raised externally by the academics.

In the case of the above opportunities, with the exception of partner placement, the academic department’s source their own candidates for these short-term contracts. You are therefore strongly advised to make contact with the relevant Heads of Departments or Institutes. A listing of HoDs is available at:

From time to time, temporary appointments are available at Rhodes University. These mostly occur in administrative posts.

If you are available for temporary work, please:

  1. Complete the application form: Application Form for Temporary Employment ; and
  2. Send it together with your CV to jobs@ru.ac.za with the words “Application for Temporary Employment” as the title to your e-mail.
