About WWF China China is one of the biologically richest places on the planet; its varied natural resources support the livelihoods and well-being of 1.3 billion people. WWF has a long established presence in China, starting in 1980, with a representative office in Beijing and 9 field offices across the country. As of today, WWF has over 100 staff working in China on a broad range of conservation programmes including species, freshwater, forest, marine, climate change and energy, the green economy and footprint. During the past 32 years of conservation work in China, WWF’s major achievements include supporting the establishment of 62 giant panda nature reserves, the protection of over 1.64 million hectares of wetlands through the Yangtze Basin wetland conservation network, and the certification of close to 1.25 million hectares of forest as part of the Forest Stewardship Council’s responsible management system. Meanwhile, working with partners, WWF has promoted sustainable business practices and launched China’s pioneering low carbon demonstration cities. WWF has also raised awareness about conservation and sustainability issues and encouraged the public and the private sector to take action through activities such as the 20 Ways to 20% energy saving initiative and Earth Hour, the world’s largest climate change action campaign.

Mission Talent has been tasked by WWF China with providing an exclusive search for the position of a Conservation Director.

Major Functions

The Conservation Director provides leadership for the delivery of conservation programme outcomes of the WWF China Conservation Strategic Plan (current plan is 2011-2015). This position directs programs and initiatives on the national and regional level to ensure coherent/ cohesive programme design and delivery. This position ‘owns’ the strategic development and implementation of the WWF China biodiversity conservation program.



The Conservation Director will lead a team of about 70 people (nearly 20 in head office in Beijing, and 50 in field offices), and manage about 60% of WWF China’s total spending. He/She will act as the go-to person for biodiversity conservation programs in China within the WWF global network, and will be the liaison person to government organizations, academic institutes, business entities, and other NGO related to biodiversity conservation. The Conservation Director bears the responsibility to increase government and public’s acceptance of WWF’s biodiversity conservation advocates, and translate those advocates into government policies and the actions of the public and businesses.
Major Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy Development and Implementation:

Provide leadership and overall direction and coordination for all biodiversity conservation activities, facilitate and support the delivery of the activities in all field offices Ensures the delivery of the WWF China biodiversity conservation plan targets and outcomes as specified in the FY2010-2015 Strategic Plan, through annual work plans, in line with WWF’s Global Programme Framework (GPF) and WWF Global Initiatives, and the programme Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). Responsible for ensuring quality and timely monitoring, reporting and evaluating of the WWF China biodiversity conservation plan and compliance with WWF Network standards. Lead the development of refinements of the conservation biodiversity strategy, as necessary, and provide inputs to overall WWF China strategies level and ensure communications and understanding of the WWF China and biodiversity conservation strategy to all staff.
Resource Mobilisation:

Secure funding for the delivery of the WWF China conservation programme consistent with targets in the Plan.

Create conditions and provide leadership for attracting new funding sources and retaining existing sources by ensuring donor relations are managed and maintained at highly-productive levels. Work with the Finance, Development and Corporate Engagement and other WWF China management to analyse causes for funding gaps, and develop adaptive actions.
Profiling WWF China Programme:

Pro-actively promote the activities, plans and programmes of the China Programme both internally and externally. Specifically responsible for ensuring WWF network outreach is effective, and that China’s priorities and resource needs are incorporated into the objectives and budgets of key WWF donor offices and initiatives. Maintain close strategic working relationships within the WWF network, and in particular with the WWF Netherlands, WWF US, WWF UK, WWF Sweden, WWF Russia, WWF Hong Kong and WWF Germany. Further, build close working relationships with new potential donor offices around the network.
People Management and Organisational Development

Review staffing requirements with the COO and HR Director to maintain the conservation function at the national and city programmes. Empower and provide authority to your direct reports and programme leads to implement their programmes nationally and regionally by creating the appropriate internal enabling environment and providing overall technical support, direction and leadership. Responsible to review individual work plans, manage performance, provide coaching and mentoring to ensure that staff are appropriately motivated and that staff deliver their performance objectives. Build a succession plan for the WWF China conservation team. Work with the HR Manager in the development of high performing individuals and high potential individuals within the organization. Work with the HR director to identify training needs and development opportunities for supervised staff and provide inputs to the identification of training needs and career development for conservation staff.
Representation & Communication:

Support the Chief Representative / CEO in delivering a professional, effective and impact-driven organisation valued by the WWF network and its partners in the Pacific. Represent the WWF China programme in high level advocacy needs at national regional and global levels based on WWF-China and WWF network positions, as appropriate. Represent the WWF China programme at various WWF Global Initiatives and other Shareholder and Senior Executive Teams As a member of the WWF China Senior Management Team (SMT), drive the organisation to deliver its conservation commitments Foster cohesion and integration in the team for a productive working relationship and atmosphere Develop agreed policy and conservation positions and speak with one voice internally to the Network and externally with Stakeholders.
Requirements

A university degree in a relevant discipline, e.g. biodiversity conservation, environmental protection, programme/project management or in a relevant field is preferred.
At least ten years’ experience in a regional or national conservation or policy advocacy-based organisation, preferably within China.

Demonstrated ability in development, management and delivery of large-scale programmes, effective management of large and complicated budgets, strategic plans and programme teams.
Demonstrated ability to strategically plan and manage the delivery of those plans using various monitoring and management systems
Demonstrated ability in leading both field and office-based team(s) and experience in staff capacity building and mentoring and/or business management would be advantageous.
Demonstrated ability in policy advocacy on sustainable resource management or conservation issues at national and preferably at a regional level.
Demonstrated ability to enter into complex policy, programme and funding partnerships with a range of stakeholders and actors.
Demonstrated ability to raise large programme funding, preferably with with a diverse group of donors.
Excellent knowledge of the China conservation arena, key stakeholders, and policy processes.
Strong commitment to conservation and development issues and ability to cope with varied workloads.
Excellent communication skills, fluency in both written and spoken English and Chinese.
