Heavy-Duty Vehicle Researcher

The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is an independent nonprofit organization founded to provide first-rate, unbiased research and technical and scientific analysis to environmental regulators. The ICCT office in Berlin is offering the position of a Heavy-Duty Vehicle Researcher to a highly organized, self-directed person, covering the following tasks:
  • Performing quantitative and qualitative analysis of current and proposed policies in the European vehicle sector, with a focus on heavy-duty vehicles (trucks and buses). Examples include assessing the current EU heavy-duty vehicle market structure and comparing it to other regions worldwide, as well as assessing the potentials and costs of CO2 emission reduction technologies in the truck sector;
  • Identifying research gaps and proposing policy relevant analysis;
  • Closely interacting and collaborating with project partners from universities, other research institutions, and independent technical consultants. Managing our outside contracts and internal review processes in order to ensure timely and top quality research results of our ongoing European heavy-duty vehicle projects. Coordinating our contributions as a Knowledge Partner to the Green Freight Europe initiative;
  • Writing technical reports, policy briefings and blogs to summarize our research results for interested audiences. Supporting our outreach activities to advance ICCT’s research results and policy recommendations within the key European and international forums. This includes organizing expert workshops, presenting our research, and interacting with various stakeholders, including government regulators, vehicle manufacturers and parts suppliers as well as the media;
  • Supporting projects in ICCT’s other program areas based on specific interest, qualification and need. Supporting the general operations of the ICCT Berlin office.
The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background with a foundation in heavy-duty engine and vehicle technology, emission and efficiency testing, knowledge of air quality, climate change and transportation policies. The candidate should have a strong understanding of the commercial trucking sector. A master’s and ideally PhD degree in engineering, environmental science, or related discipline is preferred. The position requires excellent quantitative, analytic, and research skills, along with strong written and verbal communication skills and project management experience. The ideal candidate will be highly organized, self-directed, and creative and strategic in problem solving. Fluency in a language other than English is desirable, as is working experience in the automotive sector and experience with vehicle simulation modeling.
