Greenpeace International is offering the opportunity of becoming a Science Advisor in the Oceans Unit.

Greenpeace International is looking for a Science Advisor to support our global seafood markets campaign. Working closely with different teams across the international Greenpeace organization, this role, which could be based in any Greenpeace office in Europe, will ensure sound and credible science informs our overall campaign strategies. More than fifteen national offices are currently working to increase the demand for sustainable seafood by educating consumers and retailers using tools such as “red lists” of unsustainable seafood and rankings of supermarket sourcing policies, as well as the skills developed in Greenpeace’s forty year history of successful campaigning. The Science Advisor will help national and global teams create oceans advocates who will lead positive change in the retail sector, a necessary part of Greenpeace’s work to defend our oceans.
Purpose of the job

To provide scientific advice in the development and delivery of Greenpeace campaigns and contribute to global campaign strategies in order to reach globally agreed milestones.
Key responsibilities
# Lead the development and implementation of the science components of a campaign project in accordance with campaign strategies
# Represent Greenpeace and/or lead Greenpeace delegations at international fora and meetings on campaign related issues in order to ensure that the objectives, recommendations and submissions of Greenpeace are effectively presented and adopted in accordance with strategic campaign and organisational objectives
# Develop and maintain extensive contacts and relationships with all relevant scientific contacts and other NGO’s in order to build effective networks and partnerships that promote Greenpeace campaign and organisational objectives
# Advise and support Greenpeace National and Regional Offices (NROs) in the implementation of science components of Greenpeace campaigns in accordance with organizational and campaign objectives in order to ensure that these components understood and consistently applied
# Work with GPI campaigners, Project Leaders and/or Unit Heads to advise, support and provide strategic thinking on Greenpeace campaign projects or issues, highlighting potential science issues
# Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of recent and relevant scientific developments, in accordance with long-term Greenpeace campaign objectives, in order to ensure that Greenpeace is able to respond effectively and strategically
# Prepare substantive briefings, updates, and talking points with the campaign and communications officers concerned to ensure the consistent external communication of issues. Represent Greenpeace in all forms of media, both proactively and reactively
# Participate in new projects in-line with organizational and cross campaigning requirements in order to provide relevant science input to such projects
# Proactively contribute to the development and implementation of innovative strategies for NVDA on land and sea, in cooperation with NROs and other international units, and in accordance with Greenpeace principles.


Skills and qualifications
# Proven expertise, advanced academic qualification and knowledge in relevant scientific field
# Existing networks within the relevant business, academic or NGO fora
# Pro-active thinker who thrives on bringing innovative approaches to bear on complex environmental problems
# Fluent in written and spoken English
# Proven ability to effectively adjust plans to rapidly changing circumstances, and to operate under pressure
# Excellent communication skills, including strong writing skills and proven ability to present in all forms of media
# Experience of cross-cultural working environment – “an internationalist”
# Demonstrable commitment to environmental/peace issues.
