The National Democratic Institute (NDI) seeks a Subgrants Accountant to support the Subgrants Department in the monitoring of financial reports for domestic and foreign-based subgrantee organizations. The Subgrants Accountant will play an important role in monitoring subgrantee compliance with federal regulations and non-U.S. donor regulations. This position will report and provide assistance to the Senior Subgrants Administrator(s) and applicable portfolios, and will be based in NDI’s Washington, DC office.

Resposibilities:

- Review subgrantees’ financial report packages by matching receipts to the logs of expenses, and the logs to the financial reports. Review receipts for validity and appropriateness of expenses reported. Communicate with subgrantees regarding the results of the review, as needed. Follow up with outstanding advance balances and all pending items to ensure complete reconciliation of the advances.
- File subgrant documents in binders and update the Access database.
- Send agreement packages to subgrantees via email.
- Prepare wire payment requests for management approval.
- Maintain subgrantee binders by ensuring all required documents are filed, and prepare close-out letters for expired subgrants.
- Support the Sr. Subgrants Administrator(s) as needed to contribute to an efficient and effective management of the portfolios and a positive work environment.
- Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Business Administration.
- Minimum four (4) years of work experience in international grants administration or accounting; Additional years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirement.
- Previous experience with international nonprofit organization preferred.
- High level of attention to details in all aspects of work responsibilities and excellent organizational skills.
- Strong orientation to numbers and figures.
- Good English writing skills in order to communicate with subgrantees by email.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all levels of staff and subgrantees as needed.
- Ability to constructively receive work direction.
- Ability to read, analyze and understand governmental and organizational rules and regulations.
- Capability to develop and implement effective strategies and tactics for accomplishing assigned duties.
- Working knowledge of database, word processing and Excel spreadsheet applications, as well as experience with accounting software.
- Working knowledge of OMB Circulars A-110, A-122 and A-133 preferred.
- Knowledge of the Arabic or Spanish language preferred.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 10 pounds.
