Reports to: Senior Gender officer

Department: Peace and Security Directorate

Duty Station: Mogadishu,Somalia

2. JOB PURPOSE:

To assist in the provision of policy and technical advice within the mission and to the host government and partners, regarding the advancement of gender equality and women’s rights. Promoting and ensuring compliance with African Union instruments and UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women,peace and security. In addition, the Gender Section will ensure the delivery of appropriate training at all levels within the mission, expand mission partnerships at national and other levels, and disseminate good practice and lessons learnt.

  1. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Assist in the provision of support to the mission on gender policy and operational issues;

Draft specified inputs for reportson gender-related issues;

Support the implementation of AU and UN’s Policy Directive on Gender Equality in Peacekeeping and UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on women,peace and security;

Assist in monitoring and main streaming good gender practices

Assist in the provision of substantive guidance to inform development of gender-sensitive policies and operational tools for different Sections within the mission;

Disseminate gender policies,materials and guidance

Assist in the provision of on going policy guidance on and substantive monitoring of the work of gender components in the mission

Support the staffing of gender components in peacekeeping mission;

Contribute to the consolidation and documentation of good practices on gender and peacekeeping and ensure their integration into policy development and review processes;

Perform any other duties as directed by supervisor(s).

  1. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Candidates must have a minimum Bachelor’s University Degree in sociology, political science, economics, other social science or similar fields

  1. WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Candidates must have at least 5years work experience with a Bachelor’s degree or 3 years work experience with a Master’s degree in a related field with Government, NGO, think tank,or similar multilateral, regional or international institution.

  1. SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

· Ability to work closely with governments, NGOs and multi-lateral institutions in complex political affairs, peace and security undertakings

· Computer literate and well versed in the use of the Internet, Power Point, Excel and Word

· Expertise in the field of gender affairs and/or women’s rights , together with a thorough understanding of the concepts and practices related to gender issues, particularly gender mainstreaming in Peacekeeping

· Excellent communication skills

· Ability to work in a multicultural setting

· Must be prepared to work in ahardship context and highly pressurised and sometimes hazardous environment

7. AGE REQUIREMENT:

Candidates must preferably be between 25 to 35 years old.

  1. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT :

Proficiencyin at least one of the African Union working languages (Arabic, English, Frenchand Portuguese). Knowledge of other working languages would be an addedadvantage.

  1. TENURE OF APPOINTMENT:

The appointment shall be for an initial period of one (1) year, the first three (3) months of which shall be on probation. It shall be renewable subject to performance and availability of funds.

  1. REMUNERATION:

The salary attached to the position is an annual lump-sum of US$ 74,175.04 inclusive of all allowances for internationally recruited staff.
