JOB SUMMARY:

This position is located at the Voice of America (VOA), East Asia and Pacific Division, Burmese Service. The incumbent serves as an International Broadcaster with responsibility of translating/adapting a significant proportion of English language scripts into Burmese, announcing or voicing of broadcast materials in Burmese, and conducting interviews and preparing original material.

INTRODUCTION TO AGENCY

The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), an independent federal agency, is an exciting, multicultural organization that encompasses all U.S. civilian international broadcasting. The BBG is comprised of the Voice of America, which delivers high quality, multimedia programming in 44 languages to audiences worldwide; the Office of Cuba Broadcasting (Radio and TV Marti); the International Broadcasting Bureau, which provides transmission, administrative, and other support services; and three grantee organizations - Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty; the Middle East Broadcasting Networks (Alhurra TV and Radio Sawa), and Radio Free Asia. Our staff of dedicated professionals serves as an example of a free and independent media, reaching a worldwide audience with news, information, and relevant discussions.

The BBG is conveniently located within walking distance of the Blue, Orange, Yellow and Green Metro lines.

    KEY REQUIREMENTS

DUTIES:

--Voices material for/or during radio and/or television broadcasts.

--Adapts and/or translates material from English to Burmese.

--Participates in the development of regularly scheduled radio or TV programming and materials for the Burmese Service web page.

--Covers news and feature stories and gathers background material and interviews.

--Produces live/pre-recorded airshow segments and/or satellite feeds.


QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Basic Requirements for the Position: Applicant must have a minimum of one year of specialized experience directly related to this line of work AND must be bilingual in Burmese and English with the ability to fluently report, research and accurately translate in both languages.

Specialized Experience is defined as experience in writing or editing news stories/news analyses, and/or feature stories in English and Burmese for a recognized news publication such as a daily newspaper or a weekly news magazine; or for a wire service such as AP, UPI, or Reuters; or for broadcast by a radio or television station or Internet publications. Such experience must have clearly demonstrated the ability to (1) understand and write about domestic and international affairs, (2) write for audiences of varying backgrounds and interests, (3) write under deadline pressure, and (4) exercise sound and independent news judgment.


OR

The educational requirements may be met by three (3) full years of progressively higher level graduate education or the successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or completion of all requirements for an LL.M.

Graduate Education: Major study -- journalism, communications, history, economics, political science, international relations, or other fields related to the position.

OR

Equivalent combination of successfully completed education and experience may be used to meet the experience requirements.

Special Requirements:

  • Suitability Determination: If selected you will be subject to a security investigation to establish your suitability for federal employment. The security investigation will include, among other aspects, a review of your credit and legal history.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:

Examinations Required: Candidates who meet all education and/or experience requirements must demonstrate their knowledge and ability in language writing, and translation/adaptation through successful performance in a written examination and their ability to voice material for radio broadcast on a voice audition. You will be notified as to whether you will be scheduled for testing once qualification determinations have been made. Tests are administered in Washington, DC, New York, NY, and Miami, FL on an on-going basis. Tests are administered in Boston, MA, Chicago, IL, Denver, CO, Kansas City, MO, Los Angeles, CA, Raleigh, NC, San Antonio, TX, San Francisco, CA and Seattle, WA on a quarterly basis. APPLICANTS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYING THEIR OWN EXPENSES TO AND FROM TEST SITE.
