Administration & Operations Associate (Rwanda or Burundi)

Most of the world’s poor are farmers, representing the largest and most uniform group of poor people in the world. One Acre Fund is a start-up NGO in Kenya, Rwanda, and Burundi that is innovating a new way of helping farm families to achieve their full potential. Instead of giving handouts, One Acre invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain in farm income. We provide farmers with a "market bundle" that includes education, finance, seed and fertilizer, and market access. Our program is proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure more than 100% average gain in farm income per acre. We have laser-like focus on generating better lives for the people that we serve.

We are growing quickly. In five years, we have grown to serve 130,000 farm families with more than 1000 full-time field staff. In three more years, we will at least quadruple in size, while adding several new countries. Our approach has won widespread validation, winning grants from the highly competitive Echoing Green and Skoll Foundations, and the global Financial Times/ IFC award for “basic needs financing” in 2010 and 2011. Job Description

One Acre Fund is a rapidly-growing organization, and increasingly needs professional support in the area of administration and support. These are important responsibilities – so important that the country director currently performs most of them.

We are seeking somebody to work closely with the country director to provide administration and operations support. Initial tasks would be similar to that of a special assistant, but this is also a career path role. The successful candidate will be tasked with creating and managing the administration department for OAF Rwanda/Burundi. We are seeking someone to eventually become an administration officer, and possibly the chief administration officer at some point. Example duties:

Administration & Operations Associate

  • Donor & visitor relations: Arrange all logistics of donor & interview candidate visits including housing, food, visit agenda, and accompanying donors into the field.
  • Construction and maintenance management: Supervising construction projects, housing rental and maintenance, etc.
  • Security management: Making security improvements, arranging outside security contracts.
  • Property management: Sourcing new land for property development, finding rentals for new arrivals, paying rent and bills
  • Vehicle maintenance: Supervise mechanics in regular vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Legal compliance: Tax filings, work visas, etc.
  • Medical support: Preventing malaria amongst staff (e.g. mosquito netting, spraying), ordering prescriptions, arranging timely treatment.
  • Staff management and support: Manage the local assistant pool, supervise five local managers and approximately 20 support staff, mentor these staff to take on larger roles within the organization, ensure all staffers have the highest level of support.

Possible promotion to Administration Manager with good performance:

  • Initiation of projects: Similar duties to the above, but an administration officer would largely anticipate needs, and initiate his or her own projects, proactively.
  • Development of staff: An administration officer would invest significant time in the development of their staff. Example staff include construction manager, security manager, vehicle manager, assistant pool.

Possible promotion to Chief Administration Officer:

One Acre Fund will grow to 20-30 times its current size in the next eight years. Every large organization eventually relies on a strong Chief Administration Officer (a top leadership post, supervising dozens of staff). We are looking for someone who wants to grow their career within administration.
