PROJECT BACKGROUND:
The ‘Innovative Tools to Enhance the Monitoring of Women’s Rights in Provincial Afghanistan’ project aims to improve provincial human rights monitoring by: i) enabling Afghan women-focused human rights organizations/institutions to use innovative media technology for monitoring, tracking and advocacy around rights violations including sexual and gender base violence (SGBV) cases and ii) to use radio programming and journalism training to create a more conducive environment for the work of organizations and to inform women about their rights and how to report violations. It is implemented by Internews, and funded by the US Department of State.
GENERAL FUNCTION:
The project objectives are to significantly improve and increase the coverage of SGBV related issues in the Afghan media by strengthening the ability of journalists to report accurately and in a sensitive way.Nai (an Afghan organization that provides extensive journalism training) has been awarded a grant under the project to develop a training module for SGBV reporting and will conduct trainings for journalists from provincial Afghanistan. The training module will be incorporated into Nai’s human rights training curriculum.
The project has conducted a media assessment which included a review of Nai’s existing human rights training manual and made recommendations for revisions of this curriculum to include training materials on SGBV reporting. Nai will train at least 60 journalists and will also implement a mentoring phase during which the journalist trainees will produce stories dealing with women’s human rights violations and sexual and gender based violence.
To develop the training module on SGBV reporting, Nai is looking to hire a Journalism Training Consultant with the following scope of work.
SCOPE OF WORK:
Develop and design an appropriate SGBV journalism module in collaboration with Nai and Internews that is consistent with the existing Nai Human Rights Module.
• Develop new curricular materials;
• Define course content,
• Skills to be achieved,
• Create class syllabi (develop outlines with sufficient detail to inform instruction),
• Prepare instructional materials,
• Develop guidelines for assessing competencies gained in new curriculum,
• Develop pre and post testing to assess the effectiveness of the training.
• Conduct a 5 day training of trainers in Kabul for Nai journalism trainers.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Experience in the design and development of training modules and practical training experience.
• Extensive journalism experience in reporting on women’s rights and SGBV cases
• Previous experience in Afghanistan preferred
TIMEFRAME: The consultancy will be for a period of 22 days of which approximately 15 days in country.
