Human Rights Watch (“HRW”) is seeking highly qualified applicants for the position of Spanish Web Editor to help support HRW online, one of the world’s premier sources of human rights information. The Human Rights Watch website, www.hrw.org, gets a high volume of traffic and has a social media following over half a million; both audiences are expected to expand in coming years as HRW deepens its digital investment. This position reports to the Senior Online Editor and will be based in one of HRW's offices in New York, Los Angeles or London.

Responsibilities:

1. Coordinate and vet translations, including editing press releases and translating other materials from English to Spanish, and vice versa;

2. Update and maintain the HRW website in Spanish, http://www.hrw.org/es, and promote new articles on the Spanish homepage;

3. Revise and recast HRW news releases, op-eds and other media-related documents as directed;

4. Work with the Multimedia division to translate photo essay captions and video subtitles in a timely manner, publish to HRW’s website, and promote in social media;

5. Maintain and grow the Spanish language presence in social media on Facebook, Twitter andYouTube;

6. Pitch story ideas and HRW experts to online media, news outlets, magazines and editorial boards;

7. Promote HRW news releases and reports in prominent Spanish-language media; and

8. Carry out any other tasks as required.

Qualifications:

Education: Fluency in Spanish and English is required. A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications is required. An advanced degree is desirable.

Experience: A minimum five years of online journalism and web editing experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English and Spanish are required.

2. 1 year experience as a social media manager, please provide twitter handle, and a basic understanding of SEO are required.

3. Experience working on a Content Management System (CMS), Drupal is preferred.

4. Proven track record as a writer and/or editor is required.

5. Basic understanding of HTML and Photoshop is a plus.

6. Ability to express ideas clearly and logically is required. Ability to recognize editorial opportunities is strongly desired.

7. Ability and self-motivation to work in a fast-paced environment both independently and as a member of a team is required.

8. Flexibility in responding quickly to events as they occur and producing excellent written material under tight deadlines is required.

9. Experience with a wire service, newspaper, or online journalism site or other news organization is desirable.

10. A broad range of knowledge about human rights and international affairs is desirable.

Salary and Benefits: HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers comprehensive compensation and employer-paid benefits. HRW will pay reasonable relocation expenses, if required.
