International University of East Africa Deputy Vice Chancellor

JOB PURPOSE
The Deputy Vice Chancellor will be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor and the University Council and will also be appointed in the Department that most closely aligns to his or her primary academic discipline. The key responsibility for this position is to provide leadership of the overall academic direction of the University. The successful candidate will ensure that all aspects of the broad academic portfolio continue to develop, by increasing/strengthening the academic portfolio of the University, motivating and engaging staff at all levels, communicating proactively, and influencing internal stakeholders and external partners on behalf of the University.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Work with the University team to promote and implement the University’s policies and strategies.
  • Contribute to the setting of the corporate plan and ensure it is translated into appropriate, ambitious and realistic goals, objectives and outputs that are delivered successfully through the Faculties and Deaneries for which the role holder has line management responsibility.
  • Contribute in setting realistic targets and through regular monitoring and evaluations ensure that the targets are being met
  • Take lead role in assuring that reports (quarterly and annual or as may be needed) are regularly provided to council and appropriate stakeholders
Participate in and accept shared responsibility for the corporate leadership, management and development of the University in general and more specifically the academic areas.
  • Represent and deputize for the Vice-Chancellor as required
  • Support the VC in setting benchmarks, performance review and development of the faculties and performance of Deans.
  • Undertake such other responsibilities and duties as the Vice-Chancellor and/or University Council may determine from time to time
Support development and implementation of cross-university and multi-institutional co-operation in the furtherance of the University’s Mission Statement and Strategic Plan and in the effective utilization of University resources.
  • Develop strategy and plan for partnerships and collaboration with local, regional and international academic institutions as well as with other relevant public and private sector entities
  • Maintain and develop external links with a range of local, regional, national and international academic institutions and other organizations and institutions (public and private) for a range of purposes.
Take lead in developing strategies and promote the generation of external income from various sources, including the provision of research and consultancy services by members of the University staff and affiliates.
  • Take lead role in developing implementing plans on income generation for the University
  • Provide executive leadership of externally funded programmes or projects as appropriate.
Support the further development of the University and respond to the needs of a diverse student body, external funders and stakeholders.
  • Champion models of delivery and behaviour to encourage the further enhancement of the quality of all academic programmes and services to students and other stakeholders.
  • Develop a university-wide approach to formal education that emphasizes the value and opportunities of multi-disciplinary research
  • Participate in teaching programmes and activities as appropriate
Represent the University as appropriate by participating or serving on internal and external committees, working and advisory groups as required by the Vice-Chancellor.
The incumbent must be a person with credibility in the academic community, preferably with private sector experience and have experience in co-operative initiatives as well as the translation of research into policy, strategies and plans

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A PhD level qualification
  • Have at least 10 years of teaching at University level, five of which should have been at senior lecturer level OR a distinctive record of university administration of academic related university units
  • Have been, at least, Head of Department at a recognized institution of higher learning for, at least, three years.
  • A strategic vision for the development of innovative research, education and knowledge transfer in Business, Engineering, Science and Technology
  • Evidence of and ability to develop strong national, Regional and international links with academia , public sector and industry
  • Ability to identify target application sectors and identify appropriate strategies for those sectors
  • Industrial or professional experience working for, or with industry
  • An outstanding record of achievement in research of international standing
  • Publication record in reputable journals or the equivalent in the case of an industrial background
