Position Description:
The Social Marketing and Communication Department (SMC) has distinctive competence in a science-based approach to social marketing and communication to advance public health in the U.S. SMCC currently implements a diverse portfolio of social marketing, public relations and communication projects in the U.S. which are funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, private associations, and foundations on health issues such as obesity prevention, immunization, tobacco control, and injury prevention.
As part of FHI 360’s Social Marketing and Communication Department, the Manager, communications will be responsible for providing strategic public relations, media, communication planning, oversight, and consultation and partnership outreach support to the CDC’s Division of Community Health (DCH), the DCH Office of Policy and Partnership (OPP), and the Community Transformation Grants (CTG) program, and to other SMC projects as needed. The Manager, Marketing & Communications will work on site at CDC in the Division of Community Health and will serve as the direct liaison between that office and FHI 360 offices in Washington DC. They will:
  • Provide on-site strategic communication counsel to DCH Director and OPP branch chief;
  • Conceptualize and develop PowerPoint presentations, talking points, speeches, briefing books and other materials for the DCH Director as well as other senior CDC leaders on the topic of community health, the initiatives developed at CDC as part of their prevention campaigns and the Community Transformation Grants program itself;
  • Be available to respond to media inquiries driven by deadlines in a timely manner. As part of this process, be prepared for quick turnaround on talking points and other interview-prep materials and activities including in-person media training;
  • Supervise and manage up to 4 FHI 360 Atlanta-based staff working to support the DCH communication needs; provide leadership of this team and coordinate their activities in conjunction with
  • Ensure quality control of the on-site team, particularly those aspects for which he/she is responsible, and ensure program objectives are met;
  • Help manage DCH policy communications requests and issues management, strategic communications needs, presentation and speechwriting needs, material development, partner outreach support, and media relations outreach support in collaboration with the Associate Director, Public Relations and the Deputy Director for the DCH / CTG Communications Support Project.
  • Develop and maintain close relations with DCH and OPP staff;
  • Identify issues and risks related to program implementation and suggest and carry out policy adjustments.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree or its international equivalent in Mass Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism, Public Health, Master’s preferred. Requires a minimum of twelve (12) years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of both education and experience. Minimum 4 years of experience working on health communication and social marketing programs for federal health clients. Direct experience working for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention a plus; Minimum 10 years of experience working on public relations or communication programs; Knowledge of and experience in social marketing, public relations, traditional marketing, and advertising; Knowledge of media strategies, tactics, tools, and product branding; Understanding of graphic design and print elements; Experience supervising and managing mid-level communications professionals; Experience in how to approach and market to diverse audiences with culturally suitable materials and other media products; Ability to manage large, complicated and demanding projects under tight deadlines; Demonstrated skills in research background information, writing, editing and effective dissemination of information to wide audiences. Strong client-relations skills that lead to high client satisfaction; Strong staff management, supervision and problem –solving skills. Ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, pay attention to details and handle a variety of responsibilities efficiently and effectively; Ability to apply research to program development. Excellent written and verbal communication skills including a demonstrated ability to think and write clearly, creatively and persuasively.
