Job Purpose

To lead the implementation of the programme health strategy for the country programme, and to provide technical expertise with particular reference to HIV/AIDS and other health issues affecting children under the age of 5 years.

Key accountabilities

• Establish and lead the implementation of the country health strategy, consistent with annual and strategic plans
• Serve as the principal technical expert for all matters related to health issues of children under five, particularly regarding HIV/AIDS
• Advocate for policy and practice that will support the effective implementation of the country health strategy at local, provincial and national level
• Provide technical input into the development of relevant concept notes, funding proposals (including budgets) and donor reports.
• Represent the organisation at local, regional and global and external health workshops and forums.

Person specification

• At least a Masters degree in a relevant discipline (MPH or similar)
• 10 years of professional experience of which at least 6 should be in a similar position which dealt extensively with HIV/AIDS, nutrition and general health in a child survival context, specifically for the under 5 population.
• Extensive experience in community-based operation and practice of health systems
• A thorough knowledge of the South African governmental health system at national, provincial and local levels is a prerequisite as well as ability to liaise and coordinate with government, local NGOs and communities
• Extensive experience in advocacy and contribution to policy development and implementation both internal and external to the organisation.
