RVCD Project over view

The Rice Chain Development Project, an European Union funded 22 months project started on December 16,2009 with aim to address the main bottle necks in the rice value chain in three northern districts of Sierra Leone (Bombali, Tonkolili and Koinadugu) that will ultimately contribution to the sustainable improvement of food security. The project is working on identifying opportunities to increase profitability of rice production by:

• Reducing cost through efficient utilization of resources and reduce post harvest losses by using improved techniques

• Improving bargaining position of farmers through group marketing and the use of quality rice.

• Increase value mainly through improved practices and linkage

• Providing training and exposure agricultural practices and market linkage

Scope of work

The project is seeking for an expert to develop and produce simple comprehensive practical training of trainers module which contain critical extension messages on production, post harvest management, market information, quality control, land tenure and conservation technique to farmers in their localities, require for the training of village rice consultant (VRC), in order to ensure that the VRC as service provider to the farmers become reliable resource persons in their localities.

Objectives of the assignment

To develop a simple comprehensive practical Training of Trainers’ (TOT) module on critical extension messages identified by RVCD project

Specific tasks of the consultant

RVCD project is expecting following work form expert
• Revisit key extension messages that are already identified by the by RVCD Project.

• Collect different session guide from SLARI, FAO, MAFFS, other NGOs and CARE CAP according to the topics of critical extension messages

• Hold three days workshop with the CARE staff to select the best suitable session guide and review & incorporate necessary information.

• Develop new session guide if necessary.

• Prepare, edit and produce final copy of the training of trainers’ module.

Qualification and experience
• He/she must be a graduate in Agriculture or related discipline, a holder of masters degree will be an added advantage

• He/she must have an adequate knowledge in Agricultural extension and production

• He /she must have adequate experience in developing and producing training manuals

• He /.she must have excellent facilitation skills and also the ability to build capacity of staff.

• He/she must be computer literate

Duration period of the contract:
A total number of 10 days including traveling are required to complete the assignment.

Duration: March 18th, 2011 to April 1st, 2011

The expert will start work immediately after signing the contract with CARE SL.

Remuneration package
CARE SL will provide a lump sum of dollars to the Expert, in addition with approved per Diem, transportation and accommodation as required.

Payment method
The expert shall receive payment from CARE SL upon submission of the final copy of the training module. Payment on professional fees will be subject to 10% and 5% withholding tax for international and national consultants respectively.

Administrative support
The consultant will receive an administrative support from CARE SL with a direct supervision from the project manager assisted by the ER coordinators.
