An intelligent career move

Analysing information. Spotting connections. Making decisions that really matter. MI5 Intelligence Officers do this every day. Dedicated men and women work to help safeguard the security of the nation. We investigate threats to national security including terrorism and espionage, protecting the UK’s infrastructure and preventing the spread of weapons of mass destruction. You could join them.

Being an Intelligence Officer is a rewarding, stimulating and challenging career. Most Intelligence Officers move posts every two to three years to take on new challenges, gain different experience and expand their understanding of MI5’s work. You could be carrying out investigations, assessing threats to national security or analysing digital intelligence. Intelligence Officers also work in vital roles in our legal, policy and corporate departments. You could be based in London, one of our regional offices or in Northern Ireland but wherever you start you will have your own areas of responsibility and be working as part of a wider team of people from a range of backgrounds.

MI5: the facts behind the fiction

There are many myths about working for MI5, so let us reveal the facts. As an Intelligence Officer you won’t be working on your own, carrying out surveillance or using foreign language skills. You will be working with many different organisations, be based in an office and will use your analytical skills to solve problems.

You don’t need to have studied a specific degree discipline or have been to a particular university to be a successful Intelligence Officer. You will need to be able to apply the skills you have learnt at university or in the workplace including analysing information, making decisions and communicating effectively.

Who we’re looking for

You will need to have or be expecting a 2:1 degree or equivalent or have substantial, relevant, permanent work experience. Highly organised and with a superb eye for detail, you will also be able to make informed judgements. You’ll have the confidence to brief people at all levels of our organisation and our partners across the intelligence community. You’ll need to be resilient, patient and able to deal with setbacks.

Discretion and integrity are crucial qualities. Few people will know about the role that you will play. They won’t realise your contribution to helping to protect their way of life. But you and your team will and that’s all that matters. Do you have what it takes to be quietly successful?
