Ghana Rights Media Educational Intern

Host Organization: African University College of Communication (AUCC):Tamale

Description of Host Organization: The African University College of Communication (AUCC) was established in 2001, and is dedicated to the study of media and communication. Its vision is to be the best educational institute for journalism and communication information technology in Africa.

Length of placement: 6 months, starting in January 2012

Remuneration: monthly stipend, flight and visa/vaccination expenses

Job Description:

1) Curriculum on Human Rights and Governance Reporting: The intern, in partnership with local journalists and AUCC staff, will research and write curriculum for a workshop series on human rights and governance reporting in AUCC, including best practices and lessons learned. The curriculum will be provided to all local training institutions.

2) Human Rights, Governance and Media Community Forums: the intern, alongside journalists, students and faculty at the AUCC, will develop forums aimed at engaging the local community, non-governmental organizations, government bodies, and media houses. The forums will create a dialogue on the role of the media in addressing and covering various human rights and governance issues.

3) Student Media Assistance: the intern will work with journalism students and staff to develop, launch and support AUCC campus media outlets. This includes helping with initial program development, logistics and staff training. This activity was specifically requested by the AUCC that work with students and student media.

4) Student Chapter Support: the intern will work in partnership with Human Rights and Governance Student Chapters to develop and host events, community engagement activities, and new member recruitment.

5) Canadian Engagement: The intern will write one blog posting per week focusing on their personal experiences as a Canadian intern working in Ghana. The intern will also submit to jhr and/or Speak Magazine 4 stories/articles that they have worked with local journalists to produce, each month, and will speak at one Canadian University about their experiences upon their return.

Qualifications: • A postsecondary degree or diploma in journalism • Experience working in print and radio production • Knowledge of human rights • Experience or demonstrable interest in teaching and training • Excellent personal skills • Excellent written and communication skills • Knowledge of Ghana

IYIP Eligibility criteria: • be between 19 and 30 years of age • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident legally entitled to work in Canada • be a post-secondary graduate • be unemployed or underemployed • out of school • ready to begin their professional career • have not participated in an internship with the Career Focus stream of the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy (YES)
