Overview

VERCE (http://www.verce.eu) is a European infrastructure project coordinated by the CNRS — INSU (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique — Institut National des Sciences de l'Univers) and is funded by the European Commission in the frame of the FP7-INFRASTRUCTURES-2011-2 e-Science environment program. VERCE is a 4-year project involving a consortium of ten European research and education partners in seismology, informatics and information technology.

Our Goals

The overall goal of VERCE is to deliver an e-science environment for the data intensive applications of the earthquake and seismology research community through a comprehensive service-oriented architecture and a distributed platform integrating data, Grid, Cloud and HPC infrastructures. VERCE will also provide intellectual ramps - training and dissemination - facilitating the uptake of these technologies by the research community. It has strong synergies with other European and international (USA & Japan) initiatives, and will contribute to the e-science environment of the European Plate Observatory System (EPOS): the solid earth ESFRI project.

To implement the VERCE project, the CNRS-INSU is recruiting a project manager

Position

  • Nature of the employment contract (public law): fixed term 3/4 years;
  • Location: Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, Paris 5', France;
  • Starting: as soon as possible.

Description of the position

The project manager will be responsible, under the authority of the VERCE coordinator, for planning, executing, and finalizing the VERCE project from beginning to delivery, according to strict deadlines. He or she will liaise with the partners and team members of the VERCE consortium - located in diverse locations in Europe - in order to deliver the project deliverables according to plan. The project manager will also oversee quality control throughout the project lifecycle. He or she will be a key member of the project management office together the coordinator, two administrative officers and a webmaster.

  • Implement and refine the project management processes according to plan: organize and track of project tasks, deliverables and milestones; ensure project financial management; effectively manage internal and external reporting;
  • Organize and deliver progress reports and documentation in a timely and clear fashion for internal and external communication; and for the implementation and the follow-up of the project;
  • Identify and manage project dependencies and critical paths; plan and schedule project timelines using appropriate tools;
  • Liaise with the project stakeholders, researchers and experts, and other international projects that are in synergy with VERCE;
  • Contribute to the project website and to the collaborative platform: provide material and put it online;
  • Organize and coordinate project events and meetings;
  • Provide support and participate in working groups; coordinate and integrate meetings reports.
  • '7 VERCE being a European project addressed to the international research community, all documents, written material and main relations with researchers, experts and trainers will be in English.

Candidate Profile

  • Graduate training: Doctorate or equivalent, preferably basic training in a scientific field complemented by a degree in management;
  • At least 2-3 years of relevant professional experience in research project management providing a good understanding of the European research institutions and an experience with tendering procedures and EU terminology: ideally an experience in an international environment;
  • Excellent English writing skills — ideally English as native language - and a good command of French, other languages are considered as an asset;
  • Strong familiarity with project management software - including web-enabled collaborative tools - and working knowledge of current internet technologies;
  • IT and seismology literacy are considered as an asset;
  • Good analytical and organizational skills: ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment with strict deadlines is crucial;
  • Experience at working both autonomously and in a team-oriented, collaborative and multicultural environment is essential;
  • Strong capability in communication, analysis and writing synthesis and reports;
  • Ability to read communication styles from a wide variety of team members who come from different disciplines;
  • Result-oriented approach and an open personality with strong interpersonal communication and networking skills and a flexible and dynamic attitude.

Work conditions

  • Overtime may be required in meet project deadlines;
  • Travel on occasional basis is required for the purpose of meetings;
  • Participation in training and outreach sessions may be required.
