Background / General description:
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, promotes sustainable private sector development in developing countries. The Legal Department of IFC (CLED), under the Vice President and General Counsel, is responsible for providing legal and policy advice to the IFC Board, its Management and client departments on operational, advisory and corporate matters. Specifically, CLED supports client departments in (i) the delivery of IFC’s annual program of financing private sector projects in emerging markets; (ii) the delivery of IFC’s Advisory Services programs; (iii) project portfolio management (including jeopardy projects and projects in litigation); (iv) the delivery and design of structured finance products, sub-sovereign lending, equity and quasi-equity, public-private partnerships, and carbon finance transactions; (v) advising on corporate policy and operational matters such as operating policies and procedures and Anti-Money Laundering and Combating the Funding of Terrorism; and (vi) knowledge management and training. To support IFC’s growing activities in the Europe, Middle East and North Africa (EMENA) region, CLED is recruiting a qualified Legal Assistant, to be based in Cairo, Egypt. This position is for legal support to IFC’s Investment Operations and Advisory Services (AS) in EMENA, and other legal matters from time to time.

Duties and Accountabilities:
• Under counsel supervision prepares first drafts of standard documents and agreements incorporating the term sheet

• Assists counsel in reviewing draft documents and routine amendments

• Performs routine loan or portfolio administration

• Identifies and analyzes legal and policy issues associated with assigned investment or advisory projects and presents results/recommendations clearly and concisely to IFC counsel and the relevant business team;

•Develops and maintains a good knowledge of IFC’s policies, procedures and operations;

•Attends discussions with internal and external clients, effectively communicating IFC’s policies, procedures and objectives;

•Acts as liaison with local counsel, where required;

•Prepares supporting documentation related to a program, i.e., powers of attorney, signature designations and counsel retainer faxes;

•Tracks the progress of the execution of agreements;

•Ensures originals of executed agreements are filed as per IFC procedures;

•Acts as first point of contact in the Legal Department for EMENA AS staff;

•Assists with the legal training program for EMENA AS staff;

•Handles and reviews AS legal agreements and follows up on such agreements with AS staff until the document is ready for execution; Coordinates with counsel as appropriate

•Assists IFC counsel with general AS tasks;

•Contributes to knowledge sharing initiatives on AS matters both within CLED and across the region;

•Participates in departmental working groups and committees, including the CLED working group onAS .

Selection Criteria:
• An undergraduate (college) degree and ideally some combination of undergraduate legal courses, training offered by a professional institution or law firm or 1-2 years of relevant experience as a paralegal.

• Good knowledge of IFC policies and procedures;

• Ability to provide effective paralegal support by performing multiple, concurrent and progressively more difficult assignments;

• Excellent analytical skills;

• Strong oral and written communication skills in English and good working knowledge of Arabic;

• Excellent organizational, administrative, multi-tasking and time management skills with proven ability to handle a diverse range of issues within tight deadlines;

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a team member in a multi-cultural environment;

• Word processing experience and proficient computer skills, particularly in using information databases, internet/intranet services and library sources. No paper mail/faxes or telephone calls please. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
