Palgrave Macmillan Marketing Director

Palgrave Macmillan has shown impressive growth in recent years and is embarking on a significant investment phase to ensure strength as we move into a digital future. Part of the Macmillan Holtzbrinck Group, this is a major publishing company operating worldwide in the academic, professional and trade sectors with access to the resources of a major media group with a uniquely devolved and supportive culture. Its products are books and journals, digital and print, in the scholarly, professional and trade space. We are looking for a Marketing Director to join the top management team of the company. This role will be responsible for all marketing, publicity and design globally, and will manage teams in New York and the UK. The job will be based in London. We are looking for an individual who combines strategic vision with creative flare and relishes the challenge of managing teams in different continents working on complex businesses in rapid transition. Experience of many aspects of the sectors we work in will be necessary and an innate ability to work collaboratively to create future success is essential. Major Responsibilities:

  • Strategic planning of company marketing globally, contributing in the process to corporate strategy, product development, forecasting and budgeting.
  • Directing and controlling marketing policy, campaigns and expenditure worldwide on a daily basis.
  • Direct line management of the US-based teams in academic marketing, trade marketing, and publicity and of the UK-based teams in Scholarly marketing, publicity and design.
  • Collaborative work with editorial, sales, operations, finance, and HR departments within Palgrave Macmillan, and with other relevant departments with other relevant departments within the Macmillan/ Holtzbrinck group.


  • Required Skills / Knowledge:

  • The ability to think strategically, combining a long-term vision with the demands of the short and medium term.
  • Advanced people management skills, relationship-building, teamwork and leadership; the ability to manage teams and relationships at a distance.
  • Personal effectiveness in handling complexity, change and challenge in the external and corporate environments. Technical knowledge of publishing, marketing and digital media.
  • Creative flair, with an imaginative and innovative approach to business issues
  • Specific experience of digital marketing.
  • Excellent business management skills, an acute commercial instinct and results focus.


  • Experience Needed:

  • Extensive experience of marketing in academic, professional or scientific publishing OR another area where skills could be transferable, especially where digital marketing has been a significant component.


  • This position is based in our offices in Basingstoke, just 45 minutes from London, Oxford, Reading or Southampton by train.
