Job Description

Founded in 1993, Women for Women International (WfWI) is dedicated to providing women survivors of war with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, thereby promoting viable civil societies. WfWI currently works in eight countries: Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Rwanda and Sudan. During the last 18 years, WfWI has transformed the lives of more than 315,000 socially-excluded women and distributed over $100 million in direct aid and microcredit loans, benefiting more than 1.7 million family and community members in the process. In 2010, over 80,104 women in all eight countries received program services, with more than 46,363 sponsors from 88 countries across the world. WfWI has over 600 employees worldwide, and each of our country offices are fully staffed by women and men from the local community.

Women for Women International’s Washington, DC office seeks a Sponsorship Intern for a minimum of 8 weeks.

Project Description:

The Sponsorship Program is a direct, personal, hands-on way for women in the U.S. and over 50 other countries to help women survivors of war in eight countries overseas. Sponsors are matched with a woman in one of Women for Women International's operating countries, and correspond with their “sisters” who attend a year of life and job skills training. The Sponsorship Operations Department is always busy, always active, and is an excellent opportunity for undergraduate or graduate students looking to obtain experience in the international non-profit arena.

Reporting to the Sponsorship Coordinators, interns in this department will be involved with multiple aspects of the program, and will work independently on long term projects over the course of the semester. You will be at the heart of our Sponsorship Program, working directly with letters from sponsors and participants, as well as communications to and from our chapter offices. Academic credit is available for this internship experience. Interns will also be able to meet with other departments to get a sense of the organization as a whole. We have five unpaid internships available during the summer session.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Assist in Sponsorship Program operations including:
    1. Assist in updating information on sisters as they enter and leave the program. Coordinate with chapter office staff for necessary updates and information.
    2. Assist with letter exchange between sponsors and program participants, including overseeing volunteer staff
    3. Assisting in matching process of sponsors with their sisters, including database updates and preparing and mailing correspondence regarding the status of their sisters.
    4. Contribute to writing, proofreading and editing communications, blog, and outreach materials.
  2. Assist in Sponsorship Program analytics creation including:
    1. Handle daily data import and validation.
    2. Update and maintain the integrity of the database and user manual.
    3. Prepare and publish updating of revenue as well as operational reports, such as supporter satisfaction survey, daily revenue report, etc.
    4. Work with database analytics team to design and document business process across all departments, including Marketing, Institutional Advancement, Sponsorship Operation and Program.
  3. A wide variety of other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills:

  1. Ability to work as part of a team for many tasks– while also working independently on your own projects.
  2. Experience, comfort with, or willingness to learn the following applications: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.
  3. Experience with WordPress is a plus.
  4. Excellent organizational skills and detail oriented
  5. Good written and verbal communication skills.
  6. Interest in learning the inner workings of a growing non profit
  7. A commitment to Women for Women International’s mission and vision.
  8. Flexibility – and a sense of humor!

Compensation:

Internships available at Women for Women International (WfWi) are currently unpaid positions. Academic credit is available for this internship experience.
