Position Description:

Provide leadership, management and technical expertise in education, international development, environment or a related human development field.

Strategic Decision Making

  • Work with the Director of Business Development/Business Planning and Proposals in the development and evaluation of unit/division/departmental goals and/or objectives, proposals, reports, etc., as it relates to organization’s strategic plan and priorities.
  • Lead and/or participate in the assessment of business opportunities and design team activities.
  • Provide coordination, management and development of business planning activities across countries and sectors.
  • Analyze information sources and reports and utilize the information to make strategic and informed decisions regarding new business ventures and proposal development efforts.

New Business Opportunities and Partnerships

  • Contribute to the identification and analysis of new funding opportunities issued by the US Government (domestic and international), foundations, Global Fund, UN Agencies, and other funders.
  • Work with the Director in developing and maintaining productive relationships with funders, especially US Government, as well as INGO partners.
  • Act as liaison to internal and external constituencies, vendors, sponsors, etc.

Management and Systems

  • Work with Director in the development, management, implementation and evaluation of appropriate systems, projects, services, staff and budgets.
  • Provide direction and leadership in managing all phases of the proposal development process, including the implementation of systems and processes that result in streamlined, efficient, and high quality submissions.
  • Supervise NC-based Business Planning and Proposal staff and oversee daily operations including assignment of proposals.
  • Ensure that templates and tools for proposal development are developed, and staff is adequately trained in various aspects of our work.
  • Manage the selection, development, and evaluation of assigned staff and budgets including recruitment, establishment of performance expectations, performance assessments, recommended action based on performance (e.g., recognition, disciplinary action).

Technical Assistance

  • Provide technical assistance and support to direct reports and other divisions/departments as appropriate.
  • Coordinate and support collaboration in project implementation to ensure appropriate staffing, monitoring, and evaluation.
  • Actively participate and coordinate planning and status meetings to ensure proper implementation of programs and services. Keep Director informed of project or program issues; identify and implement “best practices” as appropriate.
  • The AD will also be expected to work closely with units across FHI 360 to identify and build relationships, monitor new business opportunities, and train staff in critical areas of business development.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Expertise and Complexity

  • Work independently on multiple projects with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written, verbal, and organizational skills
  • Relevant computer software and statistical skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in development and management, including management of assigned personnel and budgets.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in health, research, education, environment, economic development, or civil society
  • Sensitivity to cultural diversity and understanding of the political and ethical issues in assigned areas.
  • Knowledge of budgets and contracts.
  • Routine coordination with FHI employees and consultants, on-site and in the field.
  • Represent FHI and/or Institute as assigned in geographic regions to external organizations at professional meetings and conferences.
  • Serve as a liaison to US regulatory agencies and government officials.
  • Supervise assigned staff.
  • Prepare and monitor approved budgets for assigned projects; approves all expenditures of funds relating to these budgets.

Ability to travel domestically and internationally at least 15%.

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree and 9-10 years relevant work experience; or BA/BS degree and 10-15 years relevant work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
