We are currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Director, Nutrition and Food Security in Washington, DC or Research Triangle Park, NC.

Position Description:

Responsible for leading a large department (50+ headquarters and 70+ international field-based staff) comprising PhD and master’s level scientific, technical and program staff, to develop and maintain an integrated and coordinated portfolio in support of FHI 360’s strategic plan, goals, and objectives. The incumbent should possess a high level of scientific, program, and management expertise and substantial experience relevant to human nutrition, food security and/or other relevant fields and the ability to manage a diverse portfolio of projects within a complex organizational framework keeping department staff aligned with organizational goals.

  • Develops and provides scientific and technical leadership for the organization’s strategic plan, mission, goals and objectives.
  • Provides leadership and guidance on U.S. legislative and international initiatives relevant to nutrition and food security policies, agreements, and initiatives.
  • Facilitates the exchange of technical information and strategies among FHI 360 staff working in nutrition and food security.
  • Develops and monitors departmental work plans, staffing plans and budgets.
  • Builds on the current network and contributes to FHI 360’s efforts to enhance and sustain capacity in nutrition and food security.
  • Represents FHI360 at scientific meetings, other nutrition technical meetings, on scientific panels and in discussions with government sponsors such as USAID as well as private foundations (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation); international organizations (especially UNICEF, WHO); government counterparts; and implementing agencies in coordinating their participation in project development and implementation.
  • Provides leadership in the communication of scientific findings in peer-reviewed publications, reports and at scientific meetings.
  • Ensures coordination with other FHI 360 Departments and Groups to foster integration of nutrition and food security into a broader portfolio
  • Contributes to and participates in FHI 360’s resource development activities.
  • Conceptualizes and obtains funding for technical assistance, research and/or program activities. Assures activities are appropriately budgeted and staffed to meet deliverables.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Substantial experience designing, working, and conducting large scale programs and/or research in developing countries, preferably in Africa and Asia.
  • Strong relationships and credibility with the international nutrition and food security community
  • Demonstrated experience in managing a large organizational unit, with good interpersonal and supervisory skills.
  • Substantive record of technical publications or presentations
  • Excellent professional reputation
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Personnel management and grantsmanship experience.
  • Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally as needed, including travel to developing countries.
  • PhD, MD or Master’s level in nutrition or health sciences, preferably in human nutrition or a related degree and 15 years+ demonstrated technical experience in nutrition and/or food security particularly related to research and programs
