Achieving sustainable food security is a major challenge for a world facing climate change, growing populations, and changing diets. The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) is looking for a senior, innovative, results-oriented scientist with excellent skills in leading and managing portfolio of Research for Development (R4D) projects. The strategic research team leader will coordinate the project portfolio of CIMMYT’s Global Conservation Agriculture Program in East and Southern Africa. He/she will provide strategic leadership and guidance in developing, implementing a coherent research for sustainable intensification in the region, aligned with the CIMMYT R4D portfolio and that of other research and development partners.

The position will be based at a CIMMYT location in Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya, or Zimbabwe)
Key responsibilities of this position will be:
  • Provide scientific leadership and further develop the regional R4D strategy for Sustainable Intensification of maize and wheat based farming systems in East and Southern Africa.
  • Ensure effective alignment and address expertise gaps for on-going and new projects.
  • Foster the development of integrated workplans with other centers/institutions in SSA.
  • Interact with CIMMYT leaders of sustainable intensification approaches in Asia and Latin America to facilitate and enhance cross-regional learning.
  • Identify funding opportunities and supervise/lead research proposal development.
  • Coordinate and review technical reporting for research projects and serve as the regional focal point for MAIZE and WHEAT CRPs Strategic Initiative 2 (Sustainable Intensification).
  • Represent GCAP program and/or CIMMYT in regional scientific and donor meetings.
  • Conduct research according to expertise.
We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
  • PhD in agriculture, soil science, ecophysiology, or a related field.
  • Good scientific publication record.
  • Significant experience in R4D research in an international context.
  • Proven experience and success in developing and managing complex/large R4D projects.
  • Good managerial and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Leadership and vision.
  • Ability and willingness to travel frequently.
We will offer an initial contract for 3 years, which is renewable subject to continued need and funding for the position and performance of the staff member.
