GFMD JOB DESCRIPTION
The Global Forum for Media Development (www.gfmd.info) seeks a candidate with outstanding ability as Coordinator of the GFMD. Her or his main task is to manage the international network of media development organisations and shape its global profile.
The coordinator will work from Brussels, Belgium, with a fascinating mix of world –class experts, researchers, decision-makers and international civil society representatives. He or she will report to the GFMD Executive Committee and Steering Committee
Overall responsibilities:
Develop GFMD as a global network of media development organisations and make it a reference for quality, innovation and influence in all aspects of media development and media support.
Fostering GFMD as a platform (forum) to raise, discuss debate and research on the problems that are confronting the media sector, thereby promoting a vibrant and free environment for media.
Institutional and Programme Development:
Ensure that GFMD maintains a strong profile with relevant stakeholders particularly among GFMD members, media development donors, international (governmental) organizations, (i)NGOs and the research community.
Promote debate about and disseminate research on the role of media, quality news and information in all development work,
Network and coordinate, especially with members of GFMD, in accordance with GFMD values and principles.
Organize bi-annually a global conference, about new trends, opportunities and stakes of media development.
Maintain links and network with GFMD members and regional GFMD caucuses to ensure exchange of information.
Identify and act on joint advocacy needs. Commission and coordinate the regular production of the GFMD’s publication, the insider.
Develop and implement a medium to long-term strategy for institutional sustainability for the GFMD through fundraising, sound financial management and sale of services where appropriate.
Organize adequate representation of the media development sector in various bi-lateral and multi-lateral forums and other influential platforms and inform the media development community about results, trends, opportunities and strategies in constant discussion and networking with the membership of GFMD, especially the Steering Committee,
Provide inputs to and execute the annual work plans and the overall strategic vision of GFMD in cooperation with Executive Committee and Steering Committee.
Management, Funding and Financial Control:
Work with the hosting organisation of the secretariat to ensure that effective administrative and financial management structures are in place to achieve the organization’s goals.
Plan, lobby and fundraise for appropriate funding for GFMD to run the secretariat and for organising the bi-annual global conference and/or regional representation as well as joint activities of GFMD members.
Manage contracts, including supervision of sub-contracted consultancies, commissions, editorial and production services, and meet donor reporting requirements.
Organize regular Executive Committee meetings as well as annual Steering Committee meetings and maintain regular contact with members between meetings;
Draw up the annual work plan and budget as well as raise funds and to seek the assistance of the Steering Committee members in realizing these goals.
Required skills and experience:
- Excellent understanding and experience in the field of media development, Information society, the media and Development Aid.
- Strong personal communication and negotiation skills in an intercultural global setting.
- Track record in fundraising and grant management.
- Experience in writing articles, key notes, external communications and the coordination of publications.
- Experience in organising major events and conferences and management of international networks.
- Knowledge of ASBL (Belgian NGO status of GFMD) legal and administrative requirement referred.
- Professional English and Fluent French, other languages will be an asset (Arabic, Russian, Spanish).
Start date: As soon as possible. The candidate should be able to sign a contract to work in Belgium.
