Grant Writer


PHR seeks a Grant Writer to join our team. This position will be located in our NYC offices.
As the Grant Writer, you will work closely with a dedicated and dynamic group of professionals primarily in our program, policy and finance departments. Your role will be to develop grant proposals, reports and other stewardship materials to help expand PHR’s fundraising. You will work with colleagues to develop written communications that clearly and compellingly articulate PHR’s work, monitor the ongoing progress of programs, and develop regular communications that will keep funders and prospective funders informed of our work.
This position requires a detail-oriented, strategic individual with superior communication skills, who can help staff to apply logic models to PHR’s work and can also communicate in this type of framework to external audiences.
Reports to: Senior Manager of Institutional Giving
Location: New York, NY

Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop fundraising strategies for new and renewed grant opportunities in collaboration with the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving as well as PHR program and finance staff.
  • Synthesize complex information into clear and concise grant proposals, reports, letters of inquiry, and other materials.
  • Assist in the stewardship of current donors and cultivation of funding prospects.
  • Maintain historical files with written correspondence and meetings.
  • In collaboration with program and finance staff, prepare and submit reports and other materials to funders, and submit them on a timely basis.
  • Assist the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving to track progress of grant proposals, responding to foundation representatives’ questions, conducting the required follow up necessary to secure grants, and produce ongoing and quality communications with funders to keep them abreast of PHR’s work.
  • Conduct research to identify new/potential foundation, corporate, and government funders.
  • Keep abreast of the latest developments in PHR funders’ grant-making guidelines and funding; modify and adapt fundraising strategies accordingly.
  • Undertake miscellaneous assignments at the discretion of the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving and Director of Development. 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of three to five years demonstrated successful experience in grants management in a non-profit setting.
  • Outstanding organizational skills and the ability to set up and maintain complex financial tracking systems.
  • Mature, adaptable, resourceful, and detailed oriented, with the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team. A good sense of humor is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including ability to work with staff at all levels, interact with donors, and represent the organization tactfully and diplomatically.
  • Demonstrated project management experience including the ability to plan efficiently, organize, and manage complex multiple projects simultaneously with limited supervision or direction, while meeting deadlines.
  • Knowledge of Office of Management and Budget A122 preferred.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Commitment to administrative financial protocol, policy and confidentiality required.
  • Technology savvy. Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office 2010 (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) with advanced knowledge of Excel. Experience with Sage MIP a plus.
  • A commitment to human rights is essential.
