Job Description
Title: Accountant/Finance Officer
Responsible to: Finance Manager
Salary: £22,100 - £26,500
Location: Fetter Lane, London (will be moving March 2013)

I. THE ORGANISATION:
The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) is Africa’s leading health development organisation working to achieve better health for Africa. AMREF is head quartered in Nairobi and has country offices in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, Sudan and Uganda.
AMREF UK supports AMREF in Africa to achieve its strategic goals and is composed of Programmes and Advocacy; Fundraising and Communications and Finance and Administration functions. AMREF UK has doubled its income in the last 3 years and is growing in size and complexity, with an increasing portfolio of innovative health programmes and multi-stakeholder partnerships, including an innovative partnership with the Guardian media group.
The part time Accountant /Finance Officer role is to take full responsibility of the day-to-day financial functions and processes of the organization.

II. Principal Functions/ Key Result Areas:

Role of this position within department is to take full responsibility of the day-to-day management of the finance systems and processes of AMREF UK.
• Take full responsibility for managing purchase ledger.
? Take full responsibility for managing income ledger, ensuring that all income are accurately recorded.
? Notify the Programmes and Fundraising Teams of any grant income.
• Responsible for AMREF UK’s cash flow, direct debit arrangements and the transfer of funds between accounts.
• Responsible for the reconciliation of all bank accounts.
• Monitor AMREF UK’s bank accounts, advising on the release of funds and on the movement of funds from deposit to general accounts in order to maximise interest and ensure best use is made of available funds.
• Ensure AMREF UK’s bank information and manuals are kept up to date.
• Work in partnership with our outsourced company, Avraam Associates to manage AMREF UK’s payroll.
• Prepare monthly payroll journal ensuring staff salary is appropriately allocated to projects as per Time and Effort Sheet.
• Responsible for international fund transfers to HQ and country offices.
• Responsible for reviewing grant claims and expenditure reports for any errors/mistakes at the request of the Programmes team.
• Prepare income and expenditure financial reports for any team member that might require it.
• Responsible for maintaining fixed asset register and calculate and record depreciation expenses.
• Responsible for operating the accounting system, (currently SUN systems), and for updating the software.
• Assist in annual budget preparation and enter budget data in to the accounting system.
• Prepare quarterly inter-company reconciliations with HQ and country offices and settle outstanding balances accordingly.
• Assist in the preparation of monthly and quarterly management accounts and respond to queries from budget holders.
• Undertake such other reasonable duties as the line manager may require from time to time.
III. PERSON SPECIFICATION:
1. EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION
• Newly qualified ACA/ACCA/CIMA or AAT qualified currently studying towards ACA/ACCA/CIMA qualification Essential
• At least three years hands on experience. Proven good finance and administrative experience at an appropriate level of responsibility Essential
• Practical IT skills, including a good working knowledge of MS Windows, MS Office and other common computing applications, email, internet Essential
• Advanced MS Excel skills Essential
• Previous experience in using accounting software package preferably SUN Systems Essential
