Assistant Secretary General

for Public Diplomacy

NATO's Public Diplomacy Division (PDD) plays a key role in conveying the Alliance's strategic and political messages to opinion formers and to the public in general. The Division also acts as coordinator for public diplomacy activities undertaken by other Divisions at NATO Headquarters and by other NATO entities.

The Assistant Secretary General (ASG)/Communications Director reports directly to the Secretary General of NATO and advises him on public diplomacy issues, as member of the senior management team. He/she will, in close cooperation with the Spokesperson, set the overall communications objectives, identify key audiences, and oversee the prioritisation of resources and the execution of plans.

Key challenges facing the successful candidate during the next 3 years will likely include: • oversight and development of NATO's Strategic Communications Policy, involving constant liaison with all relevant NATO bodies; • reform of the Division, to focus on core communications activities and effective use of resources; • development of cutting edge communications tools, with a strong emphasis on new media, to ensure that NATO's priorities and political messages are clearly communicated to the widest audiences possible in NATO and Partner countries; audiences ranging from specialists and political opinion formers to the general public and youth in particular.

Applicants must: • have a strong background developed through 10-15 years of experience in international and public diplomacy; • have a university degree (Master's level preferred) in a relevant field; • have experience working in a multilateral environment or an environment with a variety of stakeholders from multicultural backgrounds; • have a proven track record of experience in progressively senior posts, recent experience in senior-level leadership positions and significant professional experience in managerial positions; • have experience facilitating high-level dialogue and consensus; • be fluent in one of the two official languages of the Organization with a proven working knowledge of the other.
