The University of Cape Town seeks suitably qualified applicants for a five-year contract position of Pro Vice-Chancellor (Safety & Violence Initiative). This is a new position, at senior academic leadership level, created to further the University’s major strategic initiative in the improvement of safety and addressing of violence.

The Pro Vice-Chancellor position will function as a mechanism for strengthening research in this strategic area and raising the profile of existing and new research, by lending it central institutional support.

Key Requirements
The successful applicant will preferably have a PhD or senior experience in a relevant field and experience in working with policy-makers. He/she should hold, or have held, a senior research position within a university or other research organisation. He/she will be a strong visionary facilitator with excellent academic credentials, with a proven track-record of research and publications in academic or policy fields, and leadership experience. He/she will have a demonstrable commitment to inter-disciplinary research.

Role Description
The Pro Vice-Chancellor will: facilitate co-operation between the different research groupings and individuals who have an interest in improving safety in society within UCT; foster linkages between key stakeholders within the wider community and the existing research strengths within UCT; encourage an approach to improving safety in society that emphasizes the value of, and opportunities for, multidisciplinary engagements; communicate with internal and external stakeholders; lead fundraising efforts in regard to the Initiative.

To this end the incumbent must be a person with credibility in the academic or research community and experienced in co-operative initiatives as well as the translation of research into policy.

The position is for a period of five years and is envisaged to be full-time, but could be part-time.

The annual remuneration package, including benefits, for full-time appointment will be dependent on qualifications and experience, and is in the range R566,102 – R701,440.
