OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME : WHO's Department of Ethics, Equity, Trade and Human Rights was established to address the social and economic determinants of health through policies and programmes that enhance health equity and integrate pro-poor, gender-responsive, ethics and human rights-based approaches. It provides guidance to Member States and policy-makers on how to integrate ethics, human rights, social determinants and equity into policy. The Unit of Social Determinants of Health (SDH) strives to address health inequities by implementing a social determinants approach in public health programmes and to provide support to Member States in implementing a health in all policies approach. | |
Description of duties: Under the direct supervision of Coordinator SDH/ETH and in close collaboration with the ETH group established for the preparation of the World Conference on Social Determinants of Health (WCSDH) the specialist will: 1. Develop a communication and media strategy for the WCSDH in close collaboration with DGO and key stakeholders including the Government of Brazil, as host of the Conference. 2. Establish and manage a network of collaborators both internal and external to WHO in order to implement the above strategy, including running web based activities. 3. In close coordination with the host country, Regional Focal Points as well as other actors and the ETH/SDH team, ensure timely preparation of the Conference in particular: · Identifying country experiences to be presented and preparation of background and presentation materials, as needed · Identifying, briefing and confirming panellists · Organize consultations with civil society and with other interested external partners as required 4. Other tasks as required to ensure the timely preparation of the Conference. | |
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS | |
Education: Essential: University degree in communication, social or political science or public health. Desirable: Additional training or equivalent experience in advocacy, public health, programme management and evaluation. | |
Skills: - Demonstrated knowledge of communication, advocacy and partnership concepts - Excellent interpersonal skills, and ability to work in multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary environments - Strong communication and writing skills and ability to convey complex ideas to diverse audiences - Ability to facilitate and achieve consensus between different groups - Skills in promoting WHO's position in health leadership - Good programme management skills and the ability to work under pressure on multiple projects whilst maintaining high-quality and timeliness. | |
Experience: Essential: - Minimum of 7 years of professional experience, including experience at the international level, involving the development of advocacy and communication strategies preferably related to public health that involves diverse actors including the UN system, government, academia and civil society organizations. - Demonstrated experience in communicating cross-cutting health issues and strategic planning - Excellent understanding of WHO policies and procedures, including those related to communication and publishing, as well as strategies related to equity and social determinants of health. Desirable: Work experience in developing countries will be an asset. | |
Languages: Excellent knowledge of English with a working knowledge of French. | |

Monthly salary: (Net of tax) USD 5616 at single rate USD 6031 with primary dependants | Post Adjustment: 98.4 % of the above figure(s).
