VillageReach, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working in low-income countries to increase access to healthcare, invites applications for the position of Director, Information Systems.
Job Summary
The Director, Information Systems will be located in the Seattle office and will report to the President of VillageReach. The Director, working in close partnership with the President, is responsible for managing the Information Systems Group (ISG) and providing oversight for the sourcing and application of information and communications technologies (ICT) within VillageReach programs and consulting engagements. The successful candidate will be a person motivated by mission, by a highly dynamic and entrepreneurial environment, and by the understanding that his or her contribution can and will impact the success of VillageReach.
Primary responsibilities
1. Oversee the development of VillageReach’s activities that support and complement the health system strengthening work via the creative application of ICT (e.g., assess opportunities, forecast demand, define resource requirements, create go-to-market strategies, cultivate new partners and clients).
2. Define the strategy for and then manage the development and implementation of health system strengthening ICT applications (e.g., logistics management information systems) for low-income country environments.
3. Represent ISG internally and work closely with all members of VillageReach to ensure ISG alignment with the organization’s strategies and planned initiatives.
4. Keep all staff appropriately informed of all ICT initiatives, including attending team meetings, updating staff as needed, and collaborating with program and support staff to integrate ISG into all VillageReach operations as appropriate.
5. Participate as a member of the VillageReach management team and develop/manage the ISG budget.
6. Cultivate VillageReach’s relationships with external organizations and coordinate across technical and business development requirements.
7. Work closely with clients and the VillageReach Health Systems Group (HSG) and Social Business Group (SBG) to identify opportunities to improve health system logistics and meet other last mile challenges through the appropriate application of
ICT services. Interact effectively with HSG and SBG to tailor technological development to ensure appropriate and relevant design and implementation.
8. Build ISG capacity by hiring and managing all ISG human resources, including internal assistants, interns, and volunteers as well as external developers and advisors.
9. Represent VillageReach and its technology initiatives at public forums including conferences, meetings, and media and award events.
10. Provide assistance and guidance to support VillageReach’s internal information technology infrastructure.
Qualifications & Characteristics
The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal characteristics:
 Commitment to the mission. Passion for the mission of VillageReach, including strong commitment to sub-Saharan Africa and/or to broader global issues around public health and international development.
 Management skills. Strong business development, consulting and project management experience and skills. Proven ability to meet deadlines and benchmarks. Experience managing projects in low-income countries also highly desired.
 Technical skills. Expertise in logistics management information systems highly desired. Proficiency in managing software design and development, database design, user interface design, software development techniques (such as Agile), thorough understanding of hardware and network architecture; familiarity with Ruby on Rails or similar software programming skills preferred.
 Communication and interpersonal skills. Strong communication skills for working with VillageReach staff and other management team members, and for interacting with potential partners and donors. Cross-cultural communication skills a plus. Previous user training experience preferred.
 Writing and analytical skills. Superb writing skills and the ability to assemble, distill, and analyze all necessary information for decision-making and presentations. Ability to present technical information coherently to lay audiences.
 Personal qualities. Energy, intelligence, diplomacy, sound judgment, the ability to work independently without supervision, and the interpersonal skills to work effectively in partnership with the VillageReach President and other staff.
Further Requirements:
 Knowledge of international health issues and last mile infrastructure challenges.
 Ability to establish and sustain professional relationships with VillageReach staff in overseas offices, donor organizations, and peer organizations.
 Availability to travel both domestically and internationally.
 Ability to work collaboratively and collegially with a diverse group of disciplines.
 Ability to prioritize and perform multiple tasks, and work under pressure.
Education and Experience Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree and at least fifteen (15) years of experience is required. Advanced degrees in the relevant field highly desired.
