Director, Natural Resources and Human Rights Initiative
Founded in 1978, Global Rights is an international human rights capacity-building organization that works side by side with local activists in Africa, Asia, and Latin America to promote and protect the rights of marginalized populations. Through broad-based technical assistance and training, Global Rights strengthens partners to document and expose human rights abuses, conduct community outreach and mobilization, advocate for legal and policy reform, and provide legal and paralegal services.
Job Description: The Director for the Natural Resources and Human Rights Initiative gives overall guidance and leadership to Global Rights’ efforts to address economic and social rights violations that are associated with the exploitation of natural resources. S/He is responsible for building capacity of civil society organizations and for training and assisting partners in the implementation of a range of monitoring, documentation, legal, and advocacy strategies that can be used to protect and defend the rights of impacted communities. S/He is responsible for management of program and financial and administrative functions; collecting and disseminating best practices and lessons-learned; and helping to develop new fundraising and program opportunities in this program area. In the first two years s/he will focus on advocacy and strengthening the efforts of African civil society organizations seeking to raise their collective voice against human rights abuses linked to the exploitation of natural resources.
Key duties will include:
• Provides thought leadership in this area of program work, offering technical support, guidance and ideas to staff worldwide.
• Assesses feasibility of programming on these issues in a given country, selects partner organizations and designs and implements capacity building activities in collaboration with any local program staff and country/regional directors.
• Develops tools and methodologies for capacity building in advocacy on Natural Resources and Human Rights.
• Monitors and evaluates the impact of GR’s capacity building efforts (with staff and/or external experts), including the collection and analysis of lessons learned. With other Global Rights staff and partners, prepares stories and other written reports of program impact and successes, as well as program challenges, to be used for public communications and for internal use.
• Generally monitors relevant global programming that addresses economic and social rights violations linked to the exploitation of natural resources and develops and maintains strong relationships with partner organizations, other groups and actors in the human rights field, academic institutions, government agencies, and donors, especially in the realm of economic and social rights, extractive industries and corporate accountability.
• Develops concept papers for fundraising proposals and efforts, as pursued collaboratively with other staff, targeted at bilateral and multilateral donors, private foundations, and other donors.
• Manages project budgets of the Initiative, in collaboration with Finance staff.
• Fulfills other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned.
Desired qualifications include:
• Clear commitment to the vision, mission and values of Global Rights.
• Degree in Law preferable, or Bachelor’s degree with a focus on international relations, political science, or related field. Graduate studies in a related field are preferable.
• A minimum of 7 years’ experience in the international human rights field with an understanding of regional and international advocacy, the economic and social rights framework, corporate accountability and various legal systems.
• Experience in advocacy and coalition-building, specifically in Africa, familiarity with African human rights system and other advocacy opportunities at the regional level.
• Intimate knowledge of human rights challenges in resource-rich communities, particularly in Africa.
• Firsthand experience implementing or building capacity in international human rights advocacy, such as documenting human rights violations, national or international litigation, and/or human rights education and skill building at the community level.
• Demonstrated capacity to work within a collaborative framework with other staff and partner groups within a multidisciplinary and multicultural setting.
• Fundraising experience and familiarity with the relevant donor community.
• Strong abilities in project conceptualization, project design and planning.
• Experience managing project budgets.
• Ability to travel within challenging socio-economic environments.
• Fluency in oral and written communication skills in French and English is essential.
